Mercedes-AMG has just unveiled the production version of the PureSpeed speedster, which was first showcased in concept guise at the Monaco Grand Prix in May. The PureSpeed is based on the SL roadster, and is the first model from Mercedes’ limited volume and highly exclusive Mythos range; the company plans to build just 250 examples.

Mercedes-AMG PureSpeed design and interior

While it is based on the SL, the PureSpeed has been thoroughly reworked with a front end that’s clearly inspired by the AMG Project One. But what’s most distinctive about the PureSpeed is its lack of a windscreen and A-pillars – instead, it gets an F1-inspired halo-like structure that’s made of high-strength steel and is a structural element of the car. The halo comprises of a bracket connected to the vehicle’s body and ends in a hump behind the seats referencing the 300 SLR.

The front end also features reshaped air intakes and a bespoke bonnet that aids aerodynamics. At the rear, there’s a custom diffuser and the trunk lid has also been re-engineered to compensate for the lack of a roof. It sports 21-inch forged aluminium wheels with carbon-fibre covers and an extendable rear spoiler. An active aerodynamic element is hidden in the underbody, and it increases downforce on the front axle.

The PureSpeed has a unique livery that fades from red to grey and sports the number 10 on its flanks – a reference to the Mercedes that won the 1924 Targa Florio. Updates to the interior aren’t as extensive as the exterior, but it gets AMG Performance seats as standard with distinctive leather covers and decorative stitching. It also gets a beautiful two-tone steering wheel, new leather trims on the door sills and a custom IWC Schaffhausen analog watch on the dashboard.

Mercedes will also be providing two aerodynamically designed helmets that have an in-built intercom system to allow the driver and passenger to communicate with each other. It can also be synced with the car's infotainment, so one can listen to music or make phone calls.

Mercedes-AMG PureSpeed powertrain, specs

Mercedes hasn’t made any significant changes under the hood. The PureSpeed carries forward the familiar 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine that produces 585hp and 800Nm. The engine comes mated to a 9-speed automatic transmission and power is sent to all four wheels via Mercedes’ 4Matic system.

Mercedes claims the PureSpeed can sprint from 0-100kph in 3.6 seconds and it has a top-speed of 315kph. The PureSpeed also gets Mercedes’ Active Ride Control system to optimise the suspension. Carbon ceramic brakes come standard, as is active rear-axle steering.
