Volkswagen has confirmed that the Golf R400 concept it showcased last year at the Beijing motor show will enter production.

On the outside, the production car is expected to carry on the understated looks of the current Golf GTI and Golf R but get a revised aerodynamic kit consisting of splitters, diffusers and spoilers. The brakes are also expected to be upgraded to handle the power output of the car.

Under the bonnet, the car is expected to get the new 2.0-litre turbocharged unit debuted in the Audi TT Quattro Sport Concept generating around 400bhp with a chance that it may be more powerful than the concept. The production car is also expected to get a six-speed DSG gearbox but the unit may be changed to better manage the power. The R400 is also expected to receive VW’s 4MOTION all-wheel-drive system.

The production car is expected to debut as early as the Frankfurt motor show in September 2015 with sales starting internationally sometime in 2016. The company has also said that the R400 will not be a limited edition variant of the Golf.
