The Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 Coupé has been unveiled at the Detroit motor show 2015. As has been with the latest Mercedes-AMG cars, the GLE 63 Coupé is available as a standard model and also, a more powerful S version.

The GLE 63 S is powered by a 5.5-litre twin-turbo V8 engine that makes 577bhp and 77.42kgm of torque. This allows it to go from 0-100kph in a claimed 4.2 seconds. The standard Mercedes GLE 63, on the other hand, has the 5.5-litre unit in a lower state of tune, and makes 549bhp and 71.34kgm of torque. To give you a better idea; the BMW X6 M’s 4.4-litre V8 motor produces 564bhp and 76.45kgm, while the 4.8-litre V8 in the Cayenne Turbo S develops 562bhp and 81.6kgm.

Transmission duties on the Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 are managed by a seven-speed automatic gearbox that sends power to all four wheels via Merc’s 4Matic system. It has five different driving modes – Comfort, Sport, Sport Plus, Individual and Slippery Transmission.

Suspension used is again, a specifically tuned version of Merc’s AirMatic air suspension, which has variable damping control and self-levelling properties. Part of the setup is an Active Curve system that uses hydraulic motors on the stabiliser bars to improve body control and also handle higher cornering speeds than regular GLE models. The steering is the standard GLE’s electro-mechanical Direct Steer system, but it comes with speed-dependent variable-ratio assistance and unique mapping. Braking force comes from vented and cross-drilled 390mm front and 345mm rear steel discs.

In terms of styling, visual aggression comes from quintessential AMG enhancements. There’s a differently coloured, sculpted front bumper, dual-slat grille, power bulge on the bonnet, LED headlights, side cladding, grey alloys, a tailgate-mounted lip spoiler, and diffusers and quad exhausts lodged in the rear bumper.
