UPDATE: The Government of India has, again, extended the validity of expired motor vehicle documents – including driving licenses, vehicle registration papers, permits and more – until December 31, 2020. Documents that have expired on February 1 or will expire by that deadline have been granted an extention due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

  • Validity of expired documents has been extended from June 30 to September 30
  • Documents also include permits and vehicle fitness certificates

On March 30, 2020, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) asked state governments to extend the validity of vehicle and driving documents expiring between February 1 and June 30 to June 30, 2020, owing to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Ministry has now issued a new advisory to all states and union territories, asking them to further extend the validity to September 30, 2020.

In a tweet on June 9, MoRTH chief Nitin Gadkari said, “Given the current circumstances to avoid hardships being faced by transporters and citizens, State Govts are further advised that these documents be considered valid till 30 September 2020 for enforcement purpose.”

Which documents fall under this?

The documents related to the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 and the Central Motor Vehicle Rules, 1989, including driving licenses, vehicle registrations, permits and vehicle fitness certificates which have expired/or are expiring between February 1 and June 30, 2020.
