BMW India has upped the ante to compete with its rivals. The German manufacturer has increased production capacity to as many as 10,000 units in a single shift from 8,000 units earlier at its Chennai plant.

BMW currently sells its 3-series, 5-series and 7-series saloons including the 5-series Gran Turismo, the Z4 roadster and SUVs (Sport Activity Vehicles, in BMW language) like the X1 and X5.

Two new models will join the lineup soon, the first one is the re-skinned 6-series range that will be launched later this month and the X3 SAV will come sometime in mid-2011. The X3 will be imported in CKD kits and will be assembled at the BMW Plant in Chennai. The X3 is a direct competitor to the Audi Q5 and Volvo XC60.
