India-bound Audi SQ7: 5 things to know

Audi is gearing up to launch a high-performance SUV variant, the SQ7, slated to launch in the fourth quarter of 2016. Here’s why you should be waiting for this Q7’s range-topping variant:

1. New compressor to boost responsiveness

The SQ7 is powered by a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 diesel engine which produces 435hp and 900Nm of torque. What’s more is that Audi has introduced an electric-powered compressor (EPC) to improve the vehicle’s responsiveness at lower revs. Like the Q7, the SQ7 uses an eight-speed automatic transmission with a hydraulic torque converter. This mammoth SUV can outrun the fire-breathing Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT in a quick drag race as it takes 4.8 seconds (0.1 second faster than the Jeep) to sprint to 100kph from a standstill. Its top speed is electronically limited to 250kph.

2. An easy sipper

Despite weighing 2.2 tonnes, this sporty SUV boasts of an impressive fuel efficiency of 7.2 litres per 100km or 13.89kpl. What helps its case further, is its aerodynamic design that helps it cut through the air at higher speeds and boasts of a drag co-efficient of 0.34. The SQ7 uses AdBlue injection that reduces oxides of nitrogen and promises to efficiently keep a check on emission levels.

3. AWD designed for better controls

Its all-wheel steering aids better driving dynamics, as the rear wheels turn up to five degrees either in the opposite or same direction as the front wheels, depending on the situation. The SQ7 retains Audi’s quattro permanent all-wheel drive technology with a self-locking centre differential. It also gets something called electro-mechanical active body roll stabilisation which independently distributes forces to the front and rear stabiliser thus improving the car’s behaviour at both high as well as low speed and reduces body roll.

4. S-specific exteriors

This five-metre SUV looks identical to the Q7 at first glance, thanks to its body shell. However, Audi has differentiated the SQ7 from its lesser sibling using several distinct features such as a new radiator grille with an S-specific design at the bumpers, side air inlets, mirror housings and quad rectangular muffler tips. The LED headlights with dynamic turn indicators (front and rear) also make their appearance on the SQ7.

5. A Q7 underneath

The SQ7 is available with an optional third-row seating. In addition, it’s loaded with technology and safety features and has carried forward the strengths of the Q7. The SUV is expected to be priced at around Rs one crore when launched in India.
