Just like its predecessor, the new Maruti Suzuki Ertiga, launched in November 2018, has seen exceptional demand. It is longer, wider and taller than the previous-generation car and also gets more standard equipment and safety features. The second-gen Ertiga Z gets features like alloy wheels, automatic climate control, push-button start, a rear wiper, washer and defogger, 12V charging points for all three rows and a front-centre armrest. A quick check with dealerships revealed that it’s the higher trims of the MPV that are popular among customers. However, deliveries can take some time. While the ZXi and ZDi trims can be delivered in four months from booking, the top-spec ZXi+ and ZDi+ command an even longer waiting period of six months at most locations.

The Ertiga Z+ variants get Maruti’s SmartPlay infotainment system, a rear parking camera and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. Sources tell us that Maruti misjudged the demand for the higher variants of the MPV, and that is what resulted in this delay. The lower-priced LXi and LDi variants are readily available at some dealerships.

The Ertiga comes with two engine options – a tried and  tested 1.3-litre diesel that’s good for 90hp, and the new K15 105hp, 1.5-litre petrol, similar to the one in the Ciaz. Maruti, however, is expected to replace the 1.3-litre diesel with a new and slightly more powerful 1.5-litre diesel developed in-house; the engine will make 94hp and 225Nm.

The Ertiga in India takes on the recently launched Mahindra Marazzo, the Honda BR-V and the Renault Lodgy. There are talks of a more expensive and plusher six-seat Ertiga, and it is expected to hit showrooms later this year.
