Hot on the heels of the Baleno's launch, Maruti Suzuki is gearing up to introduce a refreshed Wagon R that could see a market launch in the coming weeks. While it is not yet clear on how big of a styling change the new Wagon R will get, leaked details do confirm that Maruti's popular hatchback will get two new engines, and some changes to its features list, along with added safety features.

  • Wagon R to get 1.0, 1.2 DualJet engines
  • Dual airbags now standard on all variants
  • Top variants to get alloy wheels and dual-tone paint

Updated Maruti Wagon R: what's new under the hood?

First up, the Wagon R will get two new engines. The 1.0-litre K10B engine will be replaced by the new K10C DualJet engine. This new 1.0-litre powerplant delivers 67hp and 89Nm in the new Celerio, which is 1hp and 1Nm lower than the outgoing unit. Expect the unit to offer the same output in the updated Wagon R.  The same engine could also see duty on the S-Presso in near future.

The more expensive and powerful Wagon R 1.2 will also get a new engine – the new 1.2-litre DualJet – which is seen on the Swift and the recently launched Baleno as well. The new Wagon R 1.2 DualJet will deliver 90hp, which is 7hp more than the outgoing 1.2-litre engine. We expect Maruti to offer a 5-speed manual and an AMT gearbox on both engine options.

On the fuel economy front, the new engines are set to be more efficient than the current units, with the new Wagon R expected to return up to a claimed 25.19kpl. The current hatchback returns 21.79kpl and 20.5kpl for the 1.0 and 1.2-litre models, respectively.

Updated Maruti Wagon R: cosmetic changes

As seen on most Maruti facelifts, we don't expect the Wagon R to get a major styling update just yet.  What is known, however, is that Maruti is surely looking to make the hatchback look more premium and will offer dual-tone exterior paint shades, new interior upholstery, and even alloy wheels on the higher variants of the new Wagon R.

Updated Maruti Wagon R: features and safety

While the Wagon R will continue with the same 7.0-inch touchscreen SmartPlay system, Maruti Suzuki is expected to add more safety features. Dual airbags and hill hold assist will be standard on all variants along with speed-sensitive door locks. The Wagon R will continue to come with standard safety features that include rear parking sensors, speed warning, seat-belt reminder, among others.

Updated Maruti Wagon R: expected pricing

The Wagon R is currently priced from Rs 5.18 lakh for the 1.0-litre version to Rs 6.58 lakh for the top-spec 1.2-litre model. We expect a slight bump in pricing, thanks to added features and safety bits. Expect Maruti to announce pricing for the refreshed Wagon R sometime in March 2022.

Upcoming Maruti Suzuki SUVs and cars: 2022 and beyond

Apart from the Wagon R, there are many Maruti Suzuki Nexa and Arena launches lined up for India that include the refreshed Ertiga and the XL6, a major update for the Vitara Brezza SUV, a brand-new SUV to rival the Creta, an all-new Alto, and the long delayed Jimny SUV.
