BMW has quietly re-introduced the entry-level diesel variant of the diesel 3 Series – the BMW 320d Sport. The variant was previously on sale, but was dropped from the line-up back in March 2020, and is now priced at Rs 42.10 lakh (ex-showroom, India)

  • Equipment unchanged from 330i Sport variant.
  • Powered by a 190hp, 2.0-litre diesel engine.
  • Priced Rs 5.4 lakh lower than 320d Luxury Line.

What do you get in the BMW 320d Sport?

For those familiar with the petrol-powered 330i Sport, the 320d Sport doesn’t offer anything different in terms of features. The equipment list reveals the difference in the two models to be down to the steering wheel – the 330i Sport gets a BMW M Sport steering, while the 320d Sport does not.

Other than that, you get launch control, cruise control, automatic LED headlights, rain-sensing wipers, 3-zone climate control, powered front seats, driver-seat memory function, sunroof and an 8.8-inch touchscreen, to name a few.

Meanwhile, on the safety front, you get six airbags, ABS, ESC, traction control, a rear-view camera, front and rear parking sensors and a tyre-pressure monitoring system.

However, it misses out on things such as ambient interior lighting, Apple CarPlay, a digital instrument screen, the larger 10.25-inch touchscreen and hands-free parking, all of which you’ll find on the higher-spec 320d Luxury Line variant.

What is under the hood of the BMW 320d Sport?

Powering the 320d Sport is the familiar 2.0-litre, four-cylinder diesel engine that puts out 190hp and 400Nm of torque. The unit is paired with an 8-speed torque-converter automatic gearbox, and  BMW claims a 0-100kph time of 6.8 seconds for the diesel sedan.

Where does it stand in terms of pricing in the BMW 3 Series line-up?

In terms of pricing, the 320d Sport is the second most affordable variant in the BMW 3 Series line-up, costing Rs 40,000 more than the 330i Sport (Rs 41.70 lakh, ex-showroom). The higher-spec 320d Luxury Line can be yours for a premium of Rs 5.4 lakh over the 320d Sport.

What is the current competition?

Moving to the competition, the BMW 3 Series currently rivals the Mercedes-Benz C-class and the Jaguar XE with Audi A4 yet to be re-introduced in India in its latest iteration.
