Hi, I would like your suggestion on a good bike for my needs. I am 40 years old, 5'9" tall, weigh 115 kg, and have a family. My daily commute is 72 km. The road conditions are around 6 out of 10, considering potholes and speed breakers. Traffic is above average; if I were to rate it on a scale of 1 to 10, where 1 is the least and 10 is the highest, I would rate it 7. I am open to both ICE and electric bikes. I would also prefer a bike that offers good fuel efficiency.

Given your long daily run with lots of traffic and bad roads, a simple commuter would be the best fit for your usage. In the 125cc segment, look at options like the TVS Raider, Honda Shine / SP125 and Hero Super Splendor/Xtreme, depending on your design preferences. In the 160cc class, options like Honda Unicorn / SP160, TVS Apache RTR 160 4V and Bajaj Pulsar N160 are our top picks. Depending on your budget and fuel economy requirements, pick between the class of bikes that best suit your needs.

Hi, I am planning to buy a new 125cc bike for my daily commute. My daily usage will be around 15-20 km.

In the 125cc segment, you have two clear flavours to choose from. On one hand, you have simple, straightforward machines like the Honda Shine, Hero Super Splendor and Glamour, as well as the Bajaj Pulsar 125. On the other hand, you have feature-rich, sporty-looking machines like TVS Raider, Honda CB125 Hornet and Hero Xtreme 125R. Our top picks would be the Honda Shine and TVS Raider in each category. While the overall performance and fuel economy will largely be the same, no matter which one you choose. Bikes in the latter category will have more features and also cost slightly more. What you choose will boil down to your preferences, so we would suggest a test ride of these bikes to see which one suits you best.

I’m a first-time bike owner looking for a bike with good pillion comfort and decent fuel efficiency. My budget is around ₹1 lakh to ₹1.2 lakh.

In your budget, options like the Honda Shine / SP125, Hero Super Splendor / Glamour and TVS Radeon would be our recommendation. The Radeon is the only 110cc commuter here, whereas the Hero and Honda options have 125cc engines. So they will feel a little more capable when riding with a pillion. All the bikes suggested here have great fuel economy, and with their long, single-piece seats, should also be great to carry a pillion. Take a test ride of the suggested options before you make a decision.

I have a 20 km one-way commute, and I wish to get a bike instead of a car for two reasons: first, the Mumbai traffic, and second, because a bike gives better mileage. My travel time takes approximately 1-1.5 hours. Which bike do you suggest that offers great ride comfort and decent mileage?

Since you have a pretty long commute and fuel efficiency is your priority, you should be looking at either a 125cc or a 150/160cc commuter motorcycle. In the former category, options like the TVS Raider, Hero Super Splendor / Glamour / Xtreme 125R and Honda Shine / SP125 / CB125 Hornet are bikes you should be considering. Do bear in mind that some of these are simple, no-nonsense commuters with more traditional seating positions, and some are feature-rich, snazzy-looking options - pick the one you think will suit you better. In the latter category, you should be considering Bajaj Pulsar N160, TVS Apache RTR 160 4V, Suzuki Gixxer, Yamaha FZ models and Honda Unicorn / SP160. Over here, the Yamaha and Honda bikes are slightly less powerful and have better fuel economy, while the other three are slightly sportier. In general, the 125cc bikes will be more fuel efficient and more affordable to purchase, while the 150/160s will be less so in both regards. However, if you spend a lot of time at fast highway speeds, then going for a larger machine will make sense because it will feel more relaxed at higher speeds. A test ride will help you decide which bike is the best fit for you.

I am planning to buy a Bajaj Avenger as my current bike, the Platina, is nearing the end of its fitness certificate. I am looking for a bike with a low seat height that is comfortable for my mother, who is a senior citizen, to sit on, and also suitable for long rides. Please advise whether choosing the Bajaj Avenger is a good decision and suggest which variant would be best, considering comfort, low seat height, mileage, and overall economy.

For your specific needs, a straightforward 125/160cc commuter bike would be the best fit. If mileage is the absolute top priority, then going for something in the 125cc space like the Honda Shine, Hero Super Splendor / Glamour models will be advisable. If you want something a little more powerful, then bikes like the Honda Unicorn / SP 160, Bajaj Pulsar N160 and TVS Apache RTR 160 4V single-seat variants are machines you should look at. The Avenger will be able to do what you are looking for. But being a cruiser, its ergonomics are very laidback, and its suspension isn't the most comfortable either. We would recommend taking a two-up test ride of each bike you consider before you make up your mind.
