Two-wheeler registrations in India reached 2.02 crore units in 2025, representing around 7 percent year-on-year growth.

  1. 2.02 crore two-wheelers registered vs 1.892 crore in 2024
  2. Factory dispatches rose just 1.6 percent in January-November
  3. Scooters emerged as the growth driver

GST 2.0 boosts demand

Total two-wheeler registrations in 2025 would be slightly higher than 2.02 crore

Data from the Vahan portal shows that registrations stood at 1.897 crore units between January and November, while factory dispatches during the same period were lower at 1.808 crore units. The tally was 2.02 crore until December 30, and the final registration figure for the year is expected to be slightly higher, as registration data typically lags retail purchases by two to three days.

The GST 2.0 restructuring, which reduced taxes on motorcycles and scooters up to 350cc from 28 percent to 18 percent, proved to be a key demand driver in the second half of 2025. Our sister publication, Autocar Professional, also reports that above-normal monsoons and strong rural demand further supported growth, with the festive season recording all-time highs.

Scooters played a leading role in segment growth, with TVS Motor and Suzuki posting strong double-digit gains, backed by scooter-heavy portfolios. These two manufacturers, along with bike maker Royal Enfield, were the only OEMs to record growth between January and November. Royal Enfield’s annual volumes are also expected to cross 1 million units.

Meanwhile, the gap between Hero MotoCorp and Honda widened to 8.51 lakh units during the January-November period, up from 6.89 lakh units in 2024. This shift came as Hero focused on strengthening its presence in the 125cc-plus and scooter segments, while Honda expanded its commuter motorcycle portfolio.
