Strange sound coming from the clutch

I drive a 2002 Maruti Zen. Occasionally, when I release the clutch, there is a shudder, especially with the AC on. And normally, its reverse gear engages smoothly, but sometimes I hear a grating sound. What is wrong with my car?

Ajit Gujral, via email

AAA  Since your car is quite old, there is a possibility that the clutch pressure plate or the release bearing might be weak. It’s advisable to get the clutch assembly checked to eliminate the shudder problem. And for the reverse gear problem, get the gearbox inspected.
