5 things to know before buying the Aprilia Tuono 457

By Vishal Venugopal
Here are answers to the most commonly asked questions about the Aprilia Tuono 457.

The Aprilia Tuono 457 brings the RS 457’s capable performance to a more upright and comfortable package. Based on the same platform as its fully-faired sibling, the Tuono ditches the fairing and clip-ons in favour of a more practical setup. If you’re considering one, here are answers to some of the most common questions.

What is the price of the Aprilia Tuono 457 in India?

The Aprilia Tuono 457 is priced at Rs 4.24 lakh (ex-showroom, Maharashtra). The bike comes in a single variant and is positioned Rs 27,000 below the RS 457. However, unlike the RS 457, which now gets a quickshifter as standard, the Tuono offers it as an optional add-on priced at around Rs 20,500.

How much power does the Aprilia Tuono 457 make?

The Aprilia Tuono 457 is powered by the same 457cc liquid-cooled, parallel-twin engine as the RS 457, producing 47.6hp and 43.5Nm of torque. The engine is paired with a 6-speed gearbox and a slip-and-assist clutch. The Tuono also features slightly shorter final drive gearing, thanks to a rear sprocket that’s one tooth larger than the RS, which should make it feel livelier in everyday riding conditions.

How fast is the Aprilia Tuono 457?

At our annual track day, the Tuono 457’s lap time was nearly identical to the RS 457’s, which is remarkable considering it lacks the clip-ons, wind protection, and front-end load of the faired bike. The shorter gearing also means the bike feels punchier off the line, and in our performance tests, it delivered an impressive 0-100kph time of 4.88s, making it the quickest accelerating India-made bike we’ve tested.

What is the mileage of the Aprilia Tuono 457?

In our tests, the Aprilia Tuono 457 achieved a mileage of 18.76kpl in the city and 31.86kpl on the highway. The city figure is slightly higher than the RS 457’s due to the shorter gearing, which aids acceleration in traffic. However, the highway figure is marginally lower than the RS because the shorter gearing increases engine rpm at higher speeds.

What is the seat height of the Aprilia Tuono 457?

The Aprilia Tuono 457 has a seat height of 800mm, which is quite accessible for a wide range of riders. Since the engine, main frame, suspension, brakes, and electronics are shared between the Tuono and RS 457, the seat height remains unchanged from its faired sibling. The seat is also spacious enough for most riders, although riders close to 6 feet tall may find the cockpit slightly cramped, particularly due to the fuel tank recesses that lock your knees in place.
