I am looking to buy a petrol automatic SUV primarily for city use, with occasional highway trips. I have shortlisted the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara mild-hybrid and Kia Seltos. My priorities are real-world city and highway mileage, reliability, maintenance costs, long-term ownership (8-10+ years), comfort, and overall value for money. I would appreciate advice from owners/users, especially regarding actual mileage in heavy city traffic, maintenance costs, and any issues they have faced over the years.

For your priorities, the Grand Vitara is the better long-term choice. The 1.5-litre petrol with a torque-converter automatic is smooth, comfortable and relatively easy to maintain, while Maruti's service reach and parts availability are significant advantages if you plan to keep the car for 8-10 years.

Mileage is also a strong point. In our real-world testing, the Grand Vitara petrol AT returned 11.6kpl in the city and 15.3kpl on the highway. The Seltos 1.5 petrol IVT returned 10.31kpl and 14.22kpl, respectively, in the same type of testing.

The Seltos is the more premium and feature-rich choice, with a stronger cabin experience and a more powerful 115hp engine. Its IVT is also very smooth in traffic, but if long-term running costs, serviceability and efficiency are the priorities, the Grand Vitara has the edge.

The main drawback of the Grand Vitara is performance. The 103hp/139Nm engine is adequate rather than exciting, particularly with a full load.

Go for the Maruti Suzuki Brezza. With your running of just 20km a day and rare outstation trips, the Brezza is the more sensible choice. It uses the same 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine as the Grand Vitara, so performance and efficiency are broadly similar, and in fact the lighter Brezza has a slight edge. The Brezza is also more compact and easier to manoeuvre in the city, which suits your usage pattern perfectly. It is also a well-rounded car with a comfortable ride, good reliability and low running costs.The Grand Vitara Delta is a larger car, but at this budget you are getting a lower variant with fewer features, and the extra size is not really justified given your usage. The Brezza gives you a more complete package for the money and will be easier to live with day-to-day.

I am planning to buy a car for my family, with comfort for my ageing parents as the main priority. I don't like the rubber-band effect of CVTs, although I found it less noticeable in the Honda Elevate. Because of this, I have ruled out the Seltos and Creta. I would like to know how the performance and comfort of the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara compare with the Elevate, especially since the Grand Vitara gets a torque-converter gearbox. I also do a lot of spirited highway driving and need strong performance for overtaking. My maximum budget is Rs 19 lakh on-road. Which one would you suggest?

For your requirements, the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara petrol AT makes more sense than the Elevate. The biggest reason is the gearbox. Its six-speed torque converter is smoother and more natural when accelerating hard, and it avoids the rubber-band effect you dislike with CVTs.The problem is performance. The Grand Vitara's 103hp/139Nm engine is noticeably less powerful than the Elevate's 121hp/145Nm unit, so if you frequently make quick highway overtakes with a full load, you will need to plan overtakes and use the gearbox. The Honda Elevate is the better performer on paper and feels stronger when you keep the revs up.Where the Grand Vitara does well is efficiency. In real-world testing, it returned 11.6kpl in the city and 15.3kpl on the highway, considerably better than the Elevate CVT's 8.6kpl and 13.1kpl in the same test. Choose the Grand Vitara AT if avoiding CVT behaviour and getting good efficiency are important. If spirited highway performance is the overriding priority, the Honda car remains the better engine, despite its CVT.

I am planning to buy a new SUV under Rs 30 lakh and am open to both five- and seven-seater options. I have tried the Toyota Innova HyCross non-hybrid, Mahindra XUV 7XO, Hyundai Alcazar, Kia Seltos and Renault Duster, but I am confused about which one to choose. Go for the Toyota Innova HyCross non-hybrid. Your priorities are space, comfort and a good engine, and the HyCross delivers on all three. It is one of the most spacious cars in the segment, with a genuinely usable third row and a comfortable ride that makes it an excellent family car. The petrol engine is smooth, refined and well suited to your running of under 1,000 km a month, where the hybrid premium is harder to justify.The Mahindra XUV 7XO is a strong alternative with a more powerful engine and a more feature-rich cabin, but the HyCross has the edge on space, comfort and long-term ownership experience.The Hyundai Alcazar and Kia Seltos are good cars, but they do not offer the same level of space or comfort, and the Renault Duster is more of a driver's car than a family car. The Toyota car mentioned above is the car you will be happiest with after five years of ownership.

Both the Elevate and the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder mild hybrid use naturally aspirated petrol engines, but the Elevate’s 1.5-litre engine is more refined, and the CVT gearbox is silky smooth, making it a more relaxed car to drive in everyday conditions. The Elevate also benefits from Honda’s strong reputation for long-term reliability and low maintenance costs, which is exactly what you want from a naturally aspirated petrol automatic. The Hyryder is still a good car, but the Elevate is the more complete package for this brief.

With your daily running of 15-20 km and occasional 60-70 km trips, a diesel does not make financial sense, and the hybrid will give you significantly better fuel efficiency in city driving than petrol. Help me choose the right car for my usage. Please be practical and challenge my assumptions. My situation: I am 31 and work as a software developer. I currently work from home in Balsane, Dhule, but I am moving to Mumbai around March. My wife and I are expecting a baby in February. My parents live in a village where local transport is poor. The AC is usually on, and on long trips, the car will have my wife, baby, and luggage. Budget: Rs. 6-9 lakh on-road. I am willing to spend more only if it is genuinely worth it. Shortlist: - Tiago XE Petrol - Punch Pure+/Smart Petrol - Punch Pure+/Smart CNG - Brezza LXi turbo-petrol Please tell me: 1. Which one should I buy and why? 2. Petrol vs CNG for my usage? The CNG premium is around Rs. 1 lakh, and the nearby village pump may open around Diwali, but this is not guaranteed. 3. What real-world mileage can I expect with the AC on? 4. Please consider loan interest, fuel costs, maintenance, depreciation, and resale value. 5. Is the Brezza worth the extra money? 6. Give me one final choice and tell me what I should avoid.

The Brezza LXI Turbo is far superior to the Punch and Tiago as far as smoothness, performance, and cabin space are concerned. It is also backed by Maruti's widespread support network, and the ownership experience is likely to be fuss-free. The on-road cost of the Brezza LXI will fall within your Rs 9 lakh budget, and even though you might miss a few features, it still feels worth opting for. Alternatively, you could also consider the Maruti Dzire VXI MT for its large boot, comfy ride and strong fuel efficiency.
