Since your budget is under Rs 1 lakh, pick a 100-110cc commuter from the likes of the Hero HF / Passion Plus, Honda Shine 100, Bajaj Platina 110 and TVS Sport / Star City Plus / Radeon models. The 100cc models will, of course, return more fuel efficiency than the 110s, and if you must have the lowest running costs possible, then opting for the smaller machines makes sense. All of these bikes have been around for a very long time and are hardy, reliable and time-tested products, so no matter which one you choose, you can't really go wrong. Take test rides to help make your decision process a little easier.

Upgrading from an Activa to a Meteor 350 as a first-time gear rider (5'6" height). Am I making the right choice? Hey everyone, I’ve been riding a Honda Activa for the past seven years and drive a car daily, so I have good road sense and balance. However, I’ve never ridden a motorcycle with a clutch before. I’m 5'6" and considering upgrading to the Royal Enfield Meteor 350. The low seat height feels perfect for flat-footing, but the 191 kg weight is a little intimidating, especially coming from a 100 kg scooter. For those who’ve made a similar jump or are around my height, how difficult was the learning curve when it came to using the clutch and managing the weight in traffic? Any tips for making the transition easier?

For anyone transitioning from a CVT scooter to a geared motorcycle, the initial period can be a little challenging. However, once you adapt to the system, it will almost become second nature, and there won’t be much to worry about.Going from a Honda Activa to a Royal Enfield Meteor 350 will certainly require some adjustment, given the significant difference in weight between the two machines. However, once on the move, the Meteor’s weight tends to fade into the background, so it shouldn’t be too difficult to manage. The Meteor also gets a slip-and-assist clutch, which makes the clutch action pleasingly light and should make the transition easier.

I am looking for a car that I can keep for the long term, around 8–10 years, with a budget of under Rs 15 lakh on-road in Bangalore. I would prefer an automatic with an SUV stance. My usage will mainly be a 15 km daily office commute, along with occasional highway trips. I am looking for something that looks modern, has enough space, and offers good after-sales service. A few options I have shortlisted are the Hyundai Venue/Sonet with DCT and the Renault Kiger with CVT. My main concern is whether DCTs are reliable for long-term ownership if they are regularly serviced, especially with bumper-to-bumper traffic 2–3 times a week.

Given the budget, usage and long-term ownership focus, we would recommend the Renault Kiger CVT over the Hyundai Venue or Kia Sonet DCT. A daily 15 km office commute with frequent bumper-to-bumper traffic, along with occasional highway trips, is better suited to a CVT than a DCT. CVTs are smoother at low speeds and work well in stop-start traffic. They can also be less demanding in such conditions over the long term.DCTs can be reliable when maintained properly, but they are not the ideal choice for regular stop-start traffic. Repeated low-speed crawling can generate heat and accelerate clutch-pack wear, potentially leading to expensive repairs over time.The Kiger also offers a modern design, a spacious cabin and a good feature set for its price. Renault's after-sales service has improved in recent years, while the Kiger offers strong value for money in this segment. The budget also stretches further with the Kiger CVT, allowing a higher-spec variant with some money left over. In comparison, the Sonet and Venue are positioned slightly higher, so the same budget would typically mean settling for a mid-spec variant.

Hello, I'm considering buying a bike for my daily commute to work. My office is around 25 km away from my house, and the route is a mix of highway and city roads, with occasional patches of rough, pothole-ridden roads. I do not have much experience with geared bikes, as I have been riding gearless scooters for most of my life. My expectation from the bike is that it should offer better safety and ride comfort than the Suzuki Access I currently use. Other factors that matter to me are reliability and a strong after-sales service network. Would an ADV bike be a good consideration, or should I stick to a regular commuter due to my lack of riding experience?

Since this is your first motorcycle, sticking to a commuter machine will help you ease into the transition of riding a geared bike coming from a CVT scooter. We'd recommend options like the Honda Unicorn / SP160, TVS Apache RTR 160 4V and Bajaj Pulsar N160 to you, which will offer a big step up in comfort and performance from your Access, with little to no trade-off in efficiency. These are all lightweight, simple, easy to get along with sort of bikes and should suit your needs well. Take test rides of all before you make your decision.

I am a new rider and am planning to buy the new Honda Rebel with the e-Clutch as my first bike. Should I go for the Rebel 300 or wait for the Rebel 500 which is expected to launch next February? I do not want a heavy bike like my brother's Super Meteor 650. I just want something cool and fun to ride. Also, will I be comfortable on a Rebel as I am 6 feet tall?

If this is to be your very first motorcycle, it makes more sense to go for the smaller Honda Rebel 300 over the bigger 500, although the 500 can also work as your first bike if you plan to keep it for many years but the learning curve will be quite steep in the initial days of your motorcycling journey. Both the Rebel models are much lighter than the comparable Royal Enfield bike so weight really isn't the issue. Coming to whether you will fit on the Rebel, we can't yet comment on that as we haven't been able to spend some quality seat time on either of them. We suggest you wait until both are available in a showroom near you and take a test ride before you make a decision.
