I’m looking for a car for my wife’s daily commute. A high seating position for better road visibility, ease of driving in everyday traffic, particularly in congested conditions, and good fuel efficiency are our top priorities. Her daily commute is less than 30km, with occasional highway trips of up to 90km one way, at most twice a month. It would also be helpful if the rear seat could comfortably accommodate three adults during these highway trips. What are the available options within budgets of Rs 8 lakh and Rs 12 lakh (on-road) in Kerala? Should we also consider an automatic transmission? The new car will replace our 2009 Maruti Suzuki WagonR, which my wife loves for its excellent road visibility and easy manoeuvrability. I’m looking for something that retains these qualities while offering a suitable upgrade.

You should look at the Maruti Suzuki WagonR in the used car market. The WagonR is ideal because its small footprint and narrow width make it manageable around Goa's roads. The elevated seating should also put you at ease because This Maruti Suzuki car gives you a good view of the world around you.The WagonR is a proven product without any reliability issues to speak of. Even in Goa's hot and humid conditions the WagonR does not give any problems. We'd recommend you search for the WagonR with the larger 1.2-litre petrol engine. While these are rarer, the WagonR 1.2 offers significantly more pep, which will be a boon on the narrow and hilly roads of Goa.An electric car within your price band would be extremely hard to come by and would be best avoided.

The decision for an automatic or manual really comes down to your driving conditions. It its a lot of traffic that you have in and around your area then go with an automatic and save yourself the hassle. If however this isn't the case opt for a manual as this will enable you to get a higher variant and thus more convenience features at your budget. The Tata Nexon would suit you just fine and the Pure Plus variant of the diesel automatic would fit nicely within your budget. If you do want more in terms of power and space then opt for the Mahindra XUV 3XO instead, as it has a wider rear seat and a slighly more powerful and refined engine too.

The Mahindra XEV 9e is the best electric vehicle for your needs at the moment. It offers the best package with good ride quality, great refinement, and a loaded feature set. Alternatively, you could also look at the Mahindra XEV 9S that offers the added flexibility of third-row seats, in case that is something you value. The Tata Harrier EV is the other electric vehicle that you should have in mind. It offers really cushy ride quality at low speeds and excellent performance. The Mahindra BE07 is scheduled to debut in early 2027, but could be on the pricey side and just out of your budget. There is no confirmation on when Skoda will bring the Elroq to India, though it is on the cards for an India launch.
