Hi, I have been driving a Hyundai i20 Diesel as my personal car, and we have a Toyota Fortuner for family use. Now, over the next 3 to 4 months, I am planning to upgrade my i20 to an EV for my daily commute. My budget is around Rs 30 lakh. My top priorities are performance, cabin comfort, and good ride quality. Please suggest a good 5-seater EV. I was waiting to check out the Skoda Elroq and Mahindra BE 07, but it seems their launches will involve a wait. Is it still worth waiting given my requirements, or can you suggest currently available EV models from any reliable brand?

The Mahindra XEV 9e is the best electric vehicle for your needs at the moment. It offers the best package with good ride quality, great refinement, and a loaded feature set. Alternatively, you could also look at the Mahindra XEV 9S that offers the added flexibility of third-row seats, in case that is something you value. The Tata Harrier EV is the other electric vehicle that you should have in mind. It offers really cushy ride quality at low speeds and excellent performance.

The Mahindra BE07 is scheduled to debut in early 2027, but could be on the pricey side and just out of your budget. There is no confirmation on when Skoda will bring the Elroq to India, though it is on the cards for an India launch.

Subject: Upgrading from a 2015 i20 to a Strong Hybrid SUV/MPV (Rs. 20–30 Lakh): Prioritizing Performance & Rear Comfort Background: I currently own a 2015 Hyundai i20 Elite and am looking to upgrade to a family-oriented SUV or MPV. My budget is between Rs. 20 lakh and Rs. 30 lakh (on-road), and I am strictly looking for a strong-hybrid powertrain. Core Requirements: Rear-Seat Comfort: This is an absolute priority. I am looking for excellent legroom, supportive seating, and a plush ride quality for rear passengers on long journeys. Performance: I want a car that doesn't just deliver high fuel efficiency but also feels punchy and effortless to drive, with strong acceleration for highway overtaking. City Drivability: My father will occasionally drive the car in town and finds large vehicles difficult to maneuver. Good visibility, light steering, and parking aids like a 360-degree camera are crucial for him. Current Shortlist & Dilemma: I am considering the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara / Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder strong hybrids since they fit my budget perfectly, and their compact footprint makes them much easier for my father to drive and park. However, I am concerned that their 1.5L 3-cylinder hybrid engine lacks the outright performance I want, and their rear-seat headroom and overall cabin space feel like a compromise. Alternatively, I am highly tempted to stretch my budget to Rs. 33–35 lakh for the Toyota Innova Hycross / Maruti Suzuki Invicto (mid-variants). The 2.0L hybrid engine offers the strong performance I crave, and the MPV architecture delivers unmatched rear-seat comfort. My only fear is that their sheer size will be too intimidating for my father in city traffic. Which option should I choose?

We understand your temptation to spend big on a Toyota Innova Hycross or Maruti Suzuki Invicto. Frankly, they are significantly larger and, in many ways, superior to the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder and Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, also on your short list. What the larger outlay will get you is a significantly larger vehicle with lots more room, particularly for rear seat passengers. Ride comfort is also better than what you get on the hybrid SUVs. The Innova Hycross and Invicto also offer enough power for highway cruises with ease. As for your father's concerns, the Invicto and Innova Hycross can feel intimidating at first, given how large they are. However spend time behind the wheel and you'll notice that visibility is excellent while the light steering makes low-speed manoeuvrability surprisingly easy. There is still a learning curve involved, and it might take some time getting used to the size. There are no differences between the Innova Hycross and Invicto as products. You could consider the Invicto as an option, given the good deals going on, bringing the final price closer to your budget.

Hi Autocar, I currently own a Swift ZXi (2013 model) and it still runs well in Bangalore traffic. I’m looking to upgrade to a big car that has a spacious second row that can be used as a 5 or 7 seater. My budget is around 30 lakh (on-road) but if it is worth increasing my budget, I can consider it. I’m looking for a performance car that will be primarily used for highway driving that will be around 1000km per month. I have taken the test ride of Harrier, XUV 700 (not 7XO), Jeep Meridian (which is my friend’s car that I took for 1000km+ drive and it did not cause any fatigue). I really liked the looks of Sorento but it seems little out of my budget. Is it worth considering now or should I give it some more time? Let me know if I can consider any other car for my requirement that does not have manufacturing or service issues. Also, please suggest whether I should choose diesel, petrol or EVs. I am fine with any fuel but my usage is not that much. Please advice accordingly.

Given your requirements the best choice would be a Mahindra XUV 7XO. Compared to the 700, there are substantial changes in the 7XO with regard to the suspension and ride quality. It also has a lot of tech and with your Rs. 30 lakh budget you can actually get a top-spec AX7 in luxury trim, which gets all the bells and whistles. It gets a very smooth and powerful petrol engine, a smooth gearbox, and a lot of space in the second row. It is also a seven-seater, so the third row is also spacious. If not you can even always fold it and use it as a massive boot. The Sorento is also a good choice but its starting price of over 30 lakh is hard to justify especially when you consider your requirements, which the 7XO fulfills properly. The Mahindra would be the best recommendation.Between a diesel and a petrol, it depends on your usage. If you don't travel a lot and you don't cover a lot of kilometers over a year, a petrol is always better so we would recommend you go for the petrol. If an EV is something you want to choose, then the Mahindra XEV 9S is the best choice as you get the same space as you do on the 7XO, but in an all-electric guise.

I’m planning to buy a new car, and my annual running is around 40,000km, primarily involving highway drives and ghat sections. I have shortlisted the Kia Seltos Diesel HTX and the upcoming facelifted Toyota Innova Hycross ZX. I’m considering two approaches: either buy the Innova Hycross and keep it for the next 10 years, given its reputation for longevity and the expectation that its engine can last at least 4 lakh kilometres, or buy the Seltos, drive it for around 2 lakh kilometres over 4–5 years, sell it and upgrade to a brand-new Seltos or another car of a similar price and size. On paper, the Innova Hycross Hybrid seems like the better choice, considering its long-term reliability and features such as the Ottoman reclining seats. However, I’m concerned that I might get bored of it after four years or that it may start feeling outdated as newer technologies and features enter the market. This makes the second option appealing, as it would allow me to upgrade to a brand-new car every 4–5 years. Which approach would make more sense in the long run, considering my high annual running and ownership costs?

It seems like you're leaning towards the Kia Seltos Diesel HTX, and we think it is a good choice. The diesel engine feels adequately powered for highway usage and ghat driving, and it is likely to return respectable efficiency too. Moreover, despite being modern with all the latest tech and features, the Seltos will be substantially more affordable than the Toyota Innova Hycross hybrid. So unless you need the Innova's extra space, or you frequently travel with six or seven passengers, the Kia Seltos diesel is your best bet.
