Hi! I want to buy an automatic car between Rs 10-12 lakh. I want a car that is comfortable for five adults. My driving would be 70% in the city (Delhi), with 3-4 occasional intercity vacation trips annually, and my average monthly running would be around 700km. I am considering the Hyundai i20, Hyundai Exter, Toyota Glanza and Skoda Kylaq. Can you recommend which one I should go for, along with the exact variant name? Also, feel free to recommend any other cars besides these. I would like a sunroof, though it is not a deal-breaker.

The Skoda Kylaq Signature AT would be the recommendation here. Among the cars you've shortlisted, it offers the best balance of comfort, performance and long-distance ability. The rear seat is spacious enough for five adults on shorter journeys, the torque-converter automatic is smooth in city traffic, and the turbo-petrol engine feels effortless on highways. It also rides well and feels more substantial than the hatchbacks in your list.
If rear-seat space is the absolute priority, then the Hyundai i20 Sportz IVT deserves consideration. It has one of the widest rear benches in the segment, a smooth CVT automatic and a very easy-going nature in Delhi traffic. However, it doesn't feel as robust or versatile as the Kylaq on longer highway drives.
The Toyota Glanza V AMT is the efficiency champion and will likely be the cheapest to run, but the AMT gearbox is not as polished as the automatics in the Hyundai or Skoda. The Hyundai Exter SX Tech AMT is a good urban runabout and gets a sunroof, but it feels narrower inside and isn't the most comfortable choice for five adults.

Hi Autocar, I am planning to buy my first car. I am new to the car world and to driving, having only learned the basics for obtaining my licence. I also have some driving anxiety. I need a proper automatic car. I currently have two options: the XUV 3XO MX2 Pro AT and the Kylaq Classic Plus AT. The Classic Plus misses out on rear AC vents, so is that okay? Pick the Mahindra XUV 3XO MX2 Pro automatic. It stays within your Rs. 12 lakh on-road cap and will feel easiest for a new, nervous driver thanks to its smooth automatic, light controls and good visibility. It is also one of the safer small SUVs, and importantly for you, the back seat is wide enough for three people. The downside is that the 3XO is not very fuel-efficient as it's tuned for a peppy drive.The Skoda Kylaq Classic Plus automatic will also be within your budget and meet most of your needs, but for three adults at the rear, it would not be as spacious as the Mahindra. One small tip for confidence: pick a variant with a rear camera and drive a bit more with a learning school till you are competent enough to ensure your safety and that of others on the road too. The Skoda Kylaq Automatic would be the top recommendation for your requirements. Coming from a Tiago, the Kylaq will feel like a substantial upgrade in terms of performance, refinement, ride quality and overall sophistication. Its turbo-petrol engine paired with the automatic gearbox is smooth and responsive in city driving, while also being reasonably efficient for a compact SUV. Given that 90% of your usage is in the city, it strikes an excellent balance between ease of driving, comfort and fuel economy.The Mahindra XUV 3XO Automatic would be the second choice. It offers a more spacious cabin, especially for rear-seat passengers, and comes loaded with features. However, despite being roomier inside, it has a smaller boot than the Kylaq, and real-world fuel efficiency is unlikely to be quite as good.As for hybrids, there are currently no strong hybrid SUVs available within your Rs 12-14 lakh budget. Models such as the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder Hybrid and Maruti Grand Vitara Hybrid sit in a significantly higher price bracket.

Go for the new Hyundai Venue 1.0 Turbo-petrol DCT HX5 or HX6. It is powered by a good and proven powertrain. Fuel efficiency is at par with what rivals offer in this segment, and there's also an Eco mode, to maximize efficiency. Furthermore, it has scored A BNCAP 5-star safety rating, and it gets features like sunroof, twin-screens, etc. Hyundai's service network is widespread, and overall, your ownership experience is likely to be fuss-free.You could also consider a Skoda Kylaq Signature Plus AT, which will feel more confident to drive on the highway, and it also packs all the goodies that the Hyundai offers.

Buy the Kia Seltos. It is simply easier to live with for most buyers, thanks to a much wider service network and many more variant and powertrain choices, including good automatics across a wider price range. For daily city runs with the odd highway trip, the Seltos will feel like the more complete package and it has a more spacious and premium cabin. The Skoda Kylaq will suit you only if you really enjoy driving. It feels tighter and more confidence inspiring on the move, and the steering has more feel. If you plan long, frequent road trips and care more about how it drives than gadgets, that’s where the Kylaq shines. The flip side is fewer dealers and fewer variant choices.

I own a Hyundai Venue Turbo Petrol, which is driven around 4,000 km per year and is occasionally used by my parents. I have been considering to upgrade it, as I am tired of spending money on maintenance. The car has been problematic since its second year of ownership. I am currently considering the Kia Syros HTK (EX) manual and HTK+ (DCT). However, some automobile enthusiasts have advised me against buying a DCT if I am looking for a hassle-free ownership experience, especially since the car will mostly be driven in Delhi’s office-hour traffic and the overall running is quite low. Could you please suggest whether I should opt for the DCT, stick with a manual, or consider a diesel automatic instead? Alternatively, if there are better options within a budget of Rs. 15 lakh, I would be open to considering them. I can also wait if there are any promising new launches expected this year within my budget. I am not interested in an EV at the moment. Thanks in advance.

Given your low annual running and predominantly city use in Delhi, a diesel does not make sense. Modern diesels are happiest when regularly driven on longer runs, and with just 4,000km a year, the higher purchase cost and potential emission system issues are difficult to justify.As for DCTs, they have become far more reliable than early examples, but if the priority is a smooth, stress-free ownership experience in heavy urban traffic, a torque-converter automatic is still the safer bet. It is generally smoother at low speeds and better suited to constant stop-start driving.Rather than moving to a Syros DCT, it would be worth considering the Skoda Kylaq automatic or the Mahindra XUV 3XO automatic. Both use torque-converter gearboxes and offer a more relaxed driving experience in city conditions. The Kylaq feels particularly polished to drive, while the 3XO counters with a richer feature list and a more spacious cabin.If you like the Syros, the manual remains a sensible choice given your limited annual usage, but if an automatic is preferred, a torque-converter-equipped rival would be a better fit than a DCT.

As we all know, the Mahindra XUV 7XO AX5 diesel still has a long waiting period. In that case, how does the Tata Safari Adventure X Plus Automatic Diesel compare to it? Since it is available for quicker delivery, would it be a good alternative to the XUV 7XO AX5 Diesel?

The Tata Safari Adventure X Plus Automatic Diesel is a good alternative if the waiting period for the XUV 7XO is proving too long.The Safari's biggest strengths are its comfortable ride, spacious cabin and excellent second-row seating. It is a very capable long-distance cruiser and feels premium. The diesel automatic powertrain is well suited to highway use and delivers relaxed performance for family touring.That said, the XUV 7XO still has the edge as an overall package. Its diesel engine feels stronger and more refined, the automatic gearbox is better calibrated, and it offers a more modern feature set in comparable variants. It is also the more engaging SUV to drive.If immediate delivery is important, the Safari is not a compromise that will leave you disappointed. In fact, buyers who prioritize rear-seat comfort and long-distance travel may even prefer it to the Mahindra car.
