I want to replace my manual transmission Swift hatchback with an automatic hatchback within a budget of Rs. 8 lakh. My usage is mostly in the city, often in dense traffic, so good fuel economy is a priority. Please suggest the best options.

Go for the Maruti Suzuki Celerio AMT. It fits under Rs. 8 lakh, is one of the most fuel-efficient petrol automatic hatchback that you can buy, and its light steering and small size make life easy in dense city traffic and tight parking.

You are moving from a Swift, so expect a simpler cabin and a bit less space, but the Celerio makes up for it with very low running costs and easy driving. The automatic is fine for the city, just know that at crawling speeds it can feel a little jerky if you stomp the accelerator - be gentle, and it’s smooth enough.

If you want something closer to your Swift in size and feel, and can stretch a bit, the new Swift VXi automatic or Hyundai Grand i10 Nios automatic feel nicer inside and rides better, but you will spend a bit more.

Hello, I own a 9 years old Ford Figo S TDCi (manual, diesel) that has covered more than 1.3 lakh km. I’m still proud of this car for its torquey engine, handling, and the way it drives. But lately, its hard clutch in city traffic is causing knee pain, and I am confused whether to keep it or exchange it. Does it make sense to replace my Figo now, and what resale value should I expect? Which current manual fun‑to‑drive hatchbacks come closest to the driving feel and character of the Figo S TDCi? I have considered the SKODA KYLAQ, but it is beyond my current budget. Since SKODA has just opened a showroom in Shillong, does it make sense to stretch for it, or should I stick to a hatchback I don’t want to face problems that I had faced with Ford again. If I decide to keep the Figo, will I face issues related to the parts availability in the coming years? I would love to keep it for as long as possible, but I’m also considering adding a second car like the Alto for city commuting. The fact that Skoda has opened a showroom in Shillong is a significant positive, and Skoda is a far more stable brand in India today than Ford was at the time of its exit. If you can stretch the budget, the Kylaq is the right move. For your usage, the Skoda Kylaq is a good upgrade. Your 65 km daily expressway run means you need a car that is stable at speed and comfortable over long distances. The Kylaq delivers that very well. At your budget, you could get a lower-spec automatic, which would make it easy to drive in city traffic, which matters for your twice-a-month urban runs. The automatic gearbox is a torque converter, so its shifts are very smooth and it is very reliable too. The only possible downside is that fuel efficiency is not going to be very high, and given your high daily running, this is something that might bother you. If so, opt for the Maruti Suzuki Fronx 1.2L, which is also good at higher speeds and would be more fuel efficient. The auto box in this case is an AMT, which would not be as smooth, but this would only be a bit of a bother in city traffic and not on steady highway cruising.

I have been using Honda City manual for the last 21 years. Now, I want a car with automatic transmission for city running mostly. My average running is around 1000km a month. Can you suggest whether I should buy Seltos, Creta, Kushaq or Elevate?

Given your usage of around 1,000 km a month, mostly in the city, the priority should be a smooth and reliable automatic transmission, good ride comfort and ease of ownership. The Kia Seltos IVT is the most natural recommendation here. The IVT gearbox is also very smooth, and the Seltos feels more premium and feature-rich than the competition. Alternatively, consider the Honda Elevate. The CVT is exceptionally smooth in stop-start traffic, Honda’s ownership experience is proven, and the car is simple, reliable and easy to live with.The Skoda Kushaq is the driver’s choice, with a more engaging driving experience, but in city running, that doesn't matter much. The Hyundai Creta is a good all-rounder, but it is due for a full model change in 2027, which makes the Seltos and Elevate stronger recommendations at this point.
