I currently own a 2014 Swift Dzire, which has been driven 96,000 km, and I am planning to upgrade to an SUV. My driving will mostly be in the city, with an average monthly run of around 200 to 250 km. I take 2 to 3 long trips a year, covering 500 to 1,000 km. I have three kids. I have taken test drives of the Duster, Elevate, Kushaq, Taigun, Seltos, and Creta. I initially booked the Duster but cancelled it due to limited rear-seat space. I have now booked the Elevate, but it feels lacking in performance. Should I go ahead with a car now, or wait for some time considering the current geopolitical conflicts and rising oil prices, and explore hybrid 7-seater options in the future?

Go ahead with the Honda Elevate, there is no strong reason to wait. With your low monthly running and occasional long trips, what matters most is space, comfort and ease of ownership, and the Elevate delivers that well with a roomy cabin and a relaxed, fuss-free driving experience.

Waiting for a 7 seater hybrid sounds logical, but realistically, apart from the Toyota Innova HyCross and Maruti Suzuki Invicto, there are no real options today, and new ones will take time to arrive, so you may end up waiting without a clear benefit.

If you do want a 7 seater right now, the Kia Carens Clavis petrol is a strong alternative. This Kia car offers flexible seating for your family and is comfortable for both city use and occasional long trips.

Hi everyone, I’m planning to buy a car mainly for my daily commute within Bangalore (around 35–40 km a day). Once in a quarter, my wife and I also take our parents on highway trips that can range anywhere between 200–800 km and occassionally this could be longer. I’m looking for a car that offers good comfort and space, with decent features (ADAS isn’t a priority for me). I plan to keep the car for at least 8–10 years, so reliable maintenance and after-sales service are very important. I’m still undecided between hybrid and diesel options. My budget is around ₹20–25 lakhs. Could you please suggest a good car that would suit my usage? Thanks in advance!

I am looking to upgrade from my current car, a Hyundai Aura 1.2 Petrol, as I find it a little boring to drive. I drive around 8,000 to 10,000 km a year, out of which 1,500 to 2,000 km are road trips. Among your shortlisted cars, the Virtus is the most engaging to drive, with a strong turbo petrol engine and a genuinely enjoyable chassis.It would also be worth waiting a few months for the facelift. It is expected to bring more features, sharper look and an improved air-conditioning system.The Renault Duster is quite engaging too, while offering the practicality and ground clearance of an SUV. However, it is not spacious for its size and nor is it very fuel efficient. With 3,000km a month and mostly highway driving, a diesel automatic is still the most sensible choice. At Rs 27 lakh, the Kia Carens Clavis diesel automatic is the best fit. The diesel engine is refined, efficient and well-suited to high-mileage highway use, and the automatic gearbox is smooth and reliable. I currently own a 2020 Maruti Wagon R 1.2 Manual and am planning to upgrade. I live in Mangalore, where bumper-to-bumper traffic is rare, so I would prefer a diesel automatic. I'm confused about whether to buy a 5-seater or a 7-seater. I feel a 5-seater like the Hyundai Venue Diesel AT might be enough, but I'm also considering the Kia Seltos. If neither seems like the right choice, the Mahindra XUV 7XO AX3 Diesel AT is my only 7-seater option. My family consists of my parents, my wife, and our two children (one is 4 years old). We manage comfortably in our Wagon R and go on long rides as well, so I'm unsure if a 7-seater is really necessary. I'm also open to considering an EV, but range is an issue during long rides. I'd appreciate suggestions on which option would be the best fit.

Go for the Mahindra XUV 7XO AX3 2.2 Diesel AT. While your family of six has been managing in the Wagon R, the safest way to travel is for everyone to have their own seat and be properly buckled in. As your children grow, the extra space of a seven-seater will become even more valuable. The XUV 7XO is an excellent long-distance car with a refined diesel engine and a smooth-shifting automatic gearbox. The facelift also introduced a more polished suspension setup, making it a big upgrade over the previous XUV700. The only drawback is that the third row is a bit cramped for adults, and its size can make it less convenient to drive in the city.Alternatively, consider the Kia Carens Clavis. Its diesel-automatic powertrain is also refined, and its third row is more accommodating for adults than the XUV 7XO's. The AMT gearbox is smooth enough for daily commuting, and the car is very easy to drive. Fuel efficiency is decent; expect 9 to 10kpl in the city and 15kpl on the highway.If you want something a bit more efficient, consider the Maruti Suzuki Swift. In our testing we managed 12.7kpl in the city and 19kpl on the highway with the AGS.
