Should I buy the TVS Apache RTR 310 or the KTM 390 Duke?
Swapnil Desai, via email

Autocar India says: The top spec TVS Apache RTR 310 with all the optional BTO packs selected as well as the optional Sepang Blue colour costs pretty much the same as the new KTM 390 Duke, so this is a very relevant question.

We haven’t ridden the TVS in India yet and can only give you a definitive verdict after riding both bikes together. However, we can share some details from our experience on the first ride events that should help you get a better understanding.

The two bikes take a somewhat different approach to what they have to offer. The KTM has a clear focus on performance and it is quite probably the quickest accelerating single cylinder motorcycle on sale in India at the moment. However, KTM has done a great job in making the bike more comfortable in terms of suspension as well as bringing in a lower seat height. The bike still offers typical KTM excitement as well as superb handling, but it also has a more refined and mature feel to it. It’s definitely the one to go for if performance is your top priority.

TVS is clearly behind the curve when it comes to performance, even though it has managed to squeeze out some more power from the 310cc motor that’s shared with the locally built BMWs. That being said, the RTR has some amazing, out of the box features and if that’s something that gets you excited, no other Indian bike comes close. The TVS is also good fun to ride, but engine vibrations are a weak point. Mostly though, if you don’t mind skipping the advanced electronic features and adjustable suspension, you can get the TVS for upto Rs 70,000 less than the KTM, which is a big saving.

That’s where things stand for now and we suggest that you wait for our comparison review which will happen as soon as we get our hands on both bikes.
