My daily commute is 100-125 km, with 50% city traffic and the remaining 50% on state highways where speeds do not exceed 80-90 km/h. I am currently using a 2018 Swift AGS with no issues. With a budget of Rs. 15 lakhs, please suggest an EV or any CNG car with automatic transmission. My main purpose is to reduce fuel expenses.

With 100-125 km a day and Rs. 15 lakh budget, the Tata Nexon EV Creative 45kWh fits your brief best. It will cut your running cost sharply, stays in budget, and the single-gear drive feels far smoother than your Swift’s automatic in stop-go traffic. For your mix of city and 80-90 kph state roads, it moves easily at low speeds and stays steady at cruise. The higher seat and comfortable ride also help on broken patches and speed breakers.

Do check two things: you should be able to park at home and plug in overnight, and at 80-90kph with AC the range will drop a bit, so keep some spare range in hand. In our real world tests, we managed 355km on a single charge so you will need to charge it once every two days.

If you must go CNG, consider the Tata Altroz iCNG automatic. It lowers fuel spend and keeps the easy drive, but it feels slower on CNG, the boot is smaller, and CNG pump queues can eat time. For your daily run and savings goal, go with a Nexon EV.

Under Rs 10 lakh, should I go for the Tata Punch, Altroz, Nexon Smart or something else? My priorities are safety, an automatic gearbox and decent mileage. The Honda Amaze V CVT would actually be the strongest recommendation here, even if it stretches your budget slightly. For Bangalore's traffic, the CVT automatic is significantly smoother and more pleasant to use than the AMTs offered on cars like the Punch and Altroz. The Amaze is also comfortable, easy to drive, fuel efficient and backed by Honda's reputation for reliability. Safety is solid, and there are no concerns regarding ethanol-blended fuel as the car is designed to run on the fuels currently available and planned for India.If the budget is absolutely non-negotiable, then the Tata Punch facelift AMT would be the alternative to consider. It offers a strong safety package, a commanding driving position and good practicality for city use. Just keep in mind that an AMT will never feel as smooth as the Honda's CVT in stop-start traffic.

Go for the Maruti Suzuki Swift VXI (O) MT, because of your low monthly running of 500 km and occasional highway trips suit a simple, easy-to-maintain hatchback. The Swift's compact dimensions mean its easy to drive and park in the city and it has a comfy ride quality and a spacious enough cabin for four, making it ideal for highway runs too. The 1.2-litre petrol engine is peppy, refined and fuel efficient too, while the 5-speed manual gearbox is smooth and effortless. It also comes backed by Maruti's widespread service network which will give you a stress-free ownership experience. Do note though, the boot is fairly small to those highway trips will require some planning.

If you're referring to the Kia Syros EV, it may be worth waiting if you're not in a hurry. Given what we've already seen with the Syros ICE, the Syros EV is expected to offer significantly more cabin space and practicality than the Punch EV. In fact, the Syros is closer to the Nexon in terms of overall size and interior room, so the EV version is likely to appeal to buyers looking for a more spacious family car.The trade-off is that the Syros EV will almost certainly be more expensive than the Punch EV and is expected to be positioned closer to the Nexon EV in terms of battery size, range and pricing.For your usage of office commutes and occasional road trips around Bangalore, the Punch EV facelift is already a very well-rounded product. It is well priced, easy to drive in the city and offers enough range for most use cases.

Pick the Mahindra XUV 7XO. At around Rs. 20 lakh, it gives you the best mix of space, strong performance and safety, and it is far easier to live with every day than the Thar Roxx while being a better value than a low or mid Hector variant. You also get both petrol and diesel choices, so you can match it to your running.Fuel choice is simple. Go petrol if most of your use is in the city or your running is under about 1,200 km a month. It is quieter, has fewer policy worries, and resale stays safe even if some cities tighten diesel rules. Pick diesel only if you drive long highway distances often, want a longer tank range, or haul a full family with luggage regularly.The only real downside with the XUV 7XO is that the fanciest features push you beyond Rs. 20 lakh, and there may be a wait period. If you mainly want a rugged toy, the Thar Roxx is great, but for family life, the XUV 7XO fits better.

I am confused between buying Skoda Kylaq and Kia Seltos. Please suggest.

Buy the Kia Seltos. It is simply easier to live with for most buyers, thanks to a much wider service network and many more variant and powertrain choices, including good automatics across a wider price range. For daily city runs with the odd highway trip, the Seltos will feel like the more complete package and it has a more spacious and premium cabin. The Skoda Kylaq will suit you only if you really enjoy driving. It feels tighter and more confidence inspiring on the move, and the steering has more feel. If you plan long, frequent road trips and care more about how it drives than gadgets, that’s where the Kylaq shines. The flip side is fewer dealers and fewer variant choices.

My priorities are: 1) Performance, 2) Mileage and ownership cost, 3) Features, and 4) Rear-seat and boot space. Please advise and suggest the best-value variant as well. I am inclined towards a manual.

Our first recommendation would be the new Venue Turbo Petrol Manual. It strikes the best balance for your priorities. The turbo petrol engine is punchy and enjoyable to drive, fuel efficiency is respectable, and Hyundai's ownership experience is generally hassle-free. The latest Hyundai Venue is also more spacious than before, particularly in the rear seat, and feels like a very well-rounded first car. For value, we would look at the SX Turbo Manual, which gets a good mix of features without stretching the budget too much.Our second choice would be the Mahindra XUV 3XO. If outright performance and rear seat space are your priorities, it is arguably the strongest car here. The turbo petrol engine is lively, the rear bench is among the widest in the segment, and it feels more substantial than the Venue. The downside is that fuel efficiency is not as strong, and the boot is one of the smallest in the class. The MX2 Pro or AX5 Manual would be the variants to consider, depending on your budget.The Tata Nexon would be our third choice. It remains a good all-round package with decent space, a strong feature list and good road presence. However, compared to the newer Venue and 3XO, it does not feel quite as polished, and neither the driving experience nor the ownership proposition is as compelling.
