I am planning to buy a new car with a budget of around Rs. 12 lakh. I am confused between the Tata Punch EV (40 kWh), Kia Sonet, Maruti Suzuki Brezza, Skoda Kylaq, and Mahindra XUV 3XO. Could you please suggest the best option for my daily usage? At present, I own a Maruti Suzuki Ertiga, and my monthly running is approximately 3,100 km. My primary concern is reducing my monthly running costs. Considering my usage pattern and priorities, which car would you recommend?

For your relatively high running and goal of reducing running costs, a diesel is probably your best pick. At 3,100 km a month, diesel will cut your per-km cost far more than petrol, and you can get a well equipped manual within Rs. 12 lakh within your shortlist. The Mahindra XUV 3XO diesel and Kia Sonet diesel are booth good options. Bear in mind, however, that you will have to take a few extra steps for diesel engine maintenance, such as occasional Adblue top-ups and high-speed runs to regenerate the DPF.

The XUV 3XO has the stronger engine, more spacious cabin and comfier suspension, whereas the Kia Sonet offers better mileage, interior quality and refinement. Another good option is the Hyundai Venue diesel, which is the best all rounder, and offers a fair mix between the XUV 3XO and Sonet. However, it is more expensive, and you will have to stretch your budget slightly to get some features.

The Brezza is a good option too, but there is no diesel, and while you can opt for CNG, you will experience a power deficit in the process. Downsides of CNG include long waits at the pump, and a CNG tank that compromises boot space. If you are fine with this, it's a good alternative, but bear in mind, there is a facelift of the Brezza coming out soon, so it might be worthwhile waiting for that.

The Punch EV 40kWh would be the absolute cheapest to run, but will push the limits of your budget and only makes sense if you have home charging. All considered, the XUV 3XO or Sonet diesel are your best options.

The Mahindra XUV 3XO would be ideal as it has the widest rear seat, thus your requirement of seating 3 healthy individuals would be best served here. This Mahindra car is also short in length and thus for a first car would not be too challenging to drive. Fuel efficiency will not be as good as rivals like say the Maruti Suzuki Brezza but given your limited running this should not bother you too much. Opt for the 1.2 litre MPFi engine as it performance is more than adequate for regular use.

I'm looking for a car that offers: a reliable and refined engine, good torque and performance, especially for hilly drives and mountain roads, peace of mind in terms of ownership, reasonable service and maintenance costs (not overly expensive like Tata), and Good long-term reliability. I just want the best overall package in terms of driving experience, reliability, comfort, safety, and ownership costs. What would you recommend in this budget, and why? At 700-800 km a month with 55% city driving, you are not running enough to justify an electric car, and the Amaze’s naturally aspirated petrol engine paired with the CVT is extremely smooth, reliable and efficient in city traffic. Honda’s long-term reliability and low maintenance costs make it a very safe first-car choice, and the Amaze is also one of the most comfortable compact sedans with a spacious rear seat and a well-sorted ride. The Punch EV is a good product, but at your running it will take too long to recover the higher upfront cost, and the 3XO MX3 Pro AT, while feature-rich, does not have the same long-term ownership confidence as the Honda car. The Amaze also fits comfortably within your Rs. 13 lakh budget, allowing you to get the top ZX CVT variant with ADAS as an added safety net. With a daily running of around 100 km, fuel efficiency becomes a major factor in ownership costs. The Skoda Kushaq petrol automatic is a good car, but the 10-13kpl you are seeing is typical for a turbo petrol automatic, especially with E20 petrol. At this usage, a diesel or a strong hybrid makes far more sense.If you do regular highway runs, a diesel is still the most practical and cost-effective solution. The Mahindra XUV 7XO diesel automatic would be the recommendation here. It is a strong highway car, comfortable, spacious and the diesel engine will deliver significantly better fuel efficiency than your Kushaq. Diesel running costs will be far lower over your kind of mileage. If that is out of your budget, something smaller like a Kia Seltos diesel, while not as powerful, is even more efficient.If your usage is mostly city a strong hybrid could be a better solution. The Maruti Suzuki Victoris is the most practical and cost-effective option. It is well priced, has a proven track record and will dramatically reduce your running costs. The strong hybrid is better suited to the city, where it is more likely to run on its electric motor than use the engine and deliver the better mileage.

I’m planning to buy an EV with a budget of Rs. 19 - 20 lakh. My heart says the Tata Sierra EV Pure 63, but my mind says the Kia Syros top variant because of features like ventilated seats. Kindly suggest which one would be the better choice.

The choice really comes down to your usage and what you value in the car. If you need more space for both passengers and luggage and have a few long drives that you would undertake, then opt for the Tata Sierra. It is a much larger car and has a very spacious interior. The ride quality is also very good over both bad city roads as well as high highway speeds. If, however, your usage is mainly going to be within the city, then the Kia Syros is the better buy. Its compact footprint will be much easier to manage while driving congested streets, and finding parking would be easier. You would also enjoy the top variant and its features.

Go for the Maruti Suzuki Brezza automatic. It is the better fit for your requirements. You want a naturally aspirated petrol engine, good mileage in both city and highway driving, and a spacious car for three people. The Brezza delivers on all those points. The 1.5-litre petrol engine of this Maruti Suzuki car is smooth and reliable, and the 6-speed torque converter automatic is well suited to Indian driving conditions. It is also a more spacious car than the Honda Amaze, with a wider cabin and better rear seat comfort for three people. The higher seating position and SUV stance also make it easier to drive in the city and over bad roads.The Amaze is a good car, but it is a compact sedan and does not offer the same level of space or practicality. The Brezza is the more complete package for your needs.
