I am planning to buy a new car with a budget of around Rs. 12 lakh. I am confused between the Tata Punch EV (40 kWh), Kia Sonet, Maruti Suzuki Brezza, Skoda Kylaq, and Mahindra XUV 3XO. Could you please suggest the best option for my daily usage? At present, I own a Maruti Suzuki Ertiga, and my monthly running is approximately 3,100 km. My primary concern is reducing my monthly running costs. Considering my usage pattern and priorities, which car would you recommend?

For your relatively high running and goal of reducing running costs, a diesel is probably your best pick. At 3,100 km a month, diesel will cut your per-km cost far more than petrol, and you can get a well-equipped manual within Rs. 12 lakh within your shortlist. The Mahindra XUV 3XO diesel and Kia Sonet diesel are both good options. Bear in mind, however, that you will have to take a few extra steps for diesel engine maintenance, such as occasional Adblue top-ups and high-speed runs to regenerate the DPF. Kia Sonet mileage depends on the engine-gearbox combination. The 1.5-litre diesel offers up to 24.1kpl with the manual and 18.6kpl with the automatic.

The XUV 3XO has the stronger engine, more spacious cabin and comfier suspension, whereas the Kia Sonet offers better mileage, interior quality and refinement. Another good option is the Hyundai Venue diesel, which is the best all-rounder, and offers a fair mix between the XUV 3XO and Sonet. However, it is more expensive, and you will have to stretch your budget slightly to get some features.

The Brezza is a good option too, but there is no diesel, and while you can opt for CNG, you will experience a power deficit in the process. Downsides of CNG include long waits at the pump, and a CNG tank that compromises boot space. If you are fine with this, it's a good alternative, but bear in mind, there is a facelift of the Brezza coming out soon, so it might be worthwhile waiting for that.

The Punch EV 40kWh would be the absolute cheapest to run, but will push the limits of your budget and only makes sense if you have home charging. All considered, the XUV 3XO or Sonet diesel are your best options.

Hi guys, I’m looking for a four-car garage that can fulfil some specific roles. I need an EV for city use in Bangalore, and I’m considering either the Tata Tiago EV or Punch EV. I also need a high-mileage family hauler, for which I’m thinking of the Toyota Innova Hycross VX(O). For a fun car for myself, I’m considering the Volkswagen Virtus GT. Finally, I want another SUV that doesn’t need to be as large as the Hycross, so I’m considering the Mahindra XUV 7XO, Kia Seltos or Mahindra BE 6. I’ll be travelling frequently between Bangalore, Hyderabad and Coimbatore, and I’m also planning a road trip across India. My overall budget for the four cars is around Rs 1-1.5 crore. Purely as a city runabout, get the smaller battery version of the Tata Tiago EV. It is compact, easy to drive, and is very capable commuter. Sure, the Punch EV, with its larger battery is would be our recommendation had it been your only car, but since your usage is specific, the Tiago EV makes more sense.As a high-mileage family hauler, the Toyota Innova Hycross VX (O) is a sensible choice. It is spacious, comfortable and reliable, and the hybrid powertrain will help keep running costs in check on your frequent long-distance trips between Bangalore, Hyderabad and Coimbatore. That said, if you don't plan to use the third row for adults as much, you could also consider the new Kia Sorento - diesel or hybrid, take your pick. It is a far more sophisticated, value-for-money option.The Volkswagen Virtus GT is a solid choice. It offers strong performance, a well-balanced chassis and a genuinely enjoyable driving experience. But we'd suggest you either wait till the end of the year for the facelift, or pick the updated Skoda Slavia 1.5 TSI instead, both of which will have minor cosmetic tweaks along with an upgraded air-con for better cabin cooling.The Mahindra XUV 7XO is quite a large car, which defeats its purpose since you'll already have the Hycross or Sorento. Instead opt for the Kia Seltos which is a relatively more compact alternative, with a premium interior, lengthy features list, and a refined character. Alternatively, you could consider a Toyota Hyryder hybrid too, which is even more compact, drives well, and is extremely fuel efficient.

I am looking to upgrade from my Tiago and have received compelling offers on two cars. The Mahindra XUV 3XO AX7 Turbo is available for Rs 14.5 lakh on-road, while the Honda City ZX CVT ADAS is priced at Rs 17.5 lakh on-road. For the exchange, Honda is offering around Rs 4 lakh for my Tiago, while Mahindra is offering around Rs 2.6 lakh. Which car should I buy?

Go for the Mahindra XUV 3XO AX7 AT at Rs 14.5 lakh on-road. The Honda City ZX CVT is a great car, but at Rs 17.5 lakh on-road, it is a significant step up in price, and the XUV 3XO is simply the better value proposition here. The AX7 AT is a well-equipped variant, and the 3XO is one of the most spacious compact SUVs in the segment, with a wide cabin that makes it a genuinely comfortable five-seater. It also offers strong performance, a good feature set and a solid ownership proposition. The Honda City ZX CVT is the more refined and more premium-feeling car, but the price difference is difficult to justify, especially when the 3XO is already a significant upgrade from your Tiago. As far as the exchange goes, try getting your Tiago evaluated on other used car platforms, such as Spinny instead - you could get a better price than what the Mahindra dealer offered.

Go for the Mahindra XUV 3XO. This Mahindra car is the best fit for your requirements. The 3XO is one of the most spacious sub-4 metre SUVs, especially at the rear, and it is also one of the safest cars in the segment with a strong Global NCAP rating. The suspension is well-tuned for Indian roads and offers a comfortable ride in the city. The Skoda Kylaq is the better driver's car with a more engaging driving experience, but it is not as spacious at the rear. The Tata Nexon is also a safe car, but the 3XO offers better rear seat space and a more comfortable ride. For 90% city driving with a focus on safety, suspension comfort and rear seat space, the 3XO is the clear recommendation.

The Honda Elevate gives you most of what you need at a significantly lower cost, and Honda’s service network is strong enough to make ownership hassle-free. Go for the Elevate if you value its stronger engine performance, else for a refined drive experience, pick the Creta.

Help me choose the right car for my usage. Please be practical and challenge my assumptions. My situation: I am 31 and work as a software developer. The CNG premium is around Rs. 1 lakh, and the nearby village pump may open around Diwali, but this is not guaranteed. 3. What real-world mileage can I expect with the AC on? 4. The Brezza LXI Turbo is far superior to the Punch and Tiago as far as smoothness, performance, and cabin space are concerned. It is also backed by Maruti's widespread support network, and the ownership experience is likely to be fuss-free. The on-road cost of the Brezza LXI will fall within your Rs 9 lakh budget, and even though you might miss a few features, it still feels worth opting for. Alternatively, you could also consider the Maruti Dzire VXI MT for its large boot, comfy ride and strong fuel efficiency.

It is one of the most spacious cars in the segment, with a genuinely usable third row and a comfortable ride that makes it an excellent family car. The petrol engine is smooth, refined and well suited to your running of under 1,000 km a month, where the hybrid premium is harder to justify.The Mahindra XUV 7XO is a strong alternative with a more powerful engine and a more feature-rich cabin, but the HyCross has the edge on space, comfort and long-term ownership experience.The Hyundai Alcazar and Kia Seltos are good cars, but they do not offer the same level of space or comfort, and the Renault Duster is more of a driver's car than a family car. The Toyota car mentioned above is the car you will be happiest with after five years of ownership.
