Hi Autocar, I am 29 years old, married, and currently working from home. My regular travel mainly includes weekly trips to town of around 50–60 km, along with occasional long drives twice a month of over 100 km. My total monthly driving averages around 500 km. I currently own a 2013 Maruti Suzuki Dzire and am now looking to upgrade to a more suitable family car for both my family and parents. I specifically want a diesel vehicle, as I prefer diesel engines and am also slightly concerned about increasing ethanol blending in petrol. The cars I am currently considering are: Kia Sonet HTX Diesel Automatic Tata Nexon Creative Plus Diesel AMT Hyundai Alcazar Executive Diesel Manual My budget is around ₹15 lakh, with slight flexibility if required. The basic features I am looking for are: Height-adjustable driver’s seat Cruise control Alloy wheels Reverse parking camera Good seating comfort Optional but desirable features include: Ventilated seats Paddle shifters Rear window sunshades Basic sunroof Could you please suggest which option would best suit my requirements and usage pattern?

The Kia Sonet HTX diesel automatic is the smoothest and most refined option from the cars listed. With a Rs 15 lakh budget, it packs all the features that you want, both basic and good-to-have ones. Its backseat isn't as spacious as the Tata Nexon, but unless you have six-footers regularly travelling at the back, the Sonet should be fine.

The entry-level Hyundai Alcazar belongs to a higher segment, and not only is it the most spacious, but it also gets you the flexibility of a third row. 

However, it will not fall within your Rs 15 lakh budget, and even after extending your budget by a few lakhs, you'll only be able to get a manual - the diesel-automatic is much more expensive.

You could also consider the Kia Syros, which is compact yet more comfortable and more spacious than the Sonet.

Hi, my budget is Rs 15-16 lakh maximum. I drive around 3,000-3,500 km per month, of which roughly 2,000 km is on highways, and the remaining 1,000-1,500 km is in the city. I am looking for a low-cost, high-value-for-money car. I have no issues with diesel. I need comfort, good power, strong torque, and decent ground clearance.

Buy the Mahindra XUV 3XO diesel. With your 2,000 km of highway every month, its strong diesel torque keeps overtaking easy and cruising relaxed, and it’s one of the few that still gives you real value under Rs. 16 lakh.It rides comfortably on broken roads and speed breakers, has proper ground clearance, and feels secure at highway speeds. The diesel’s running costs will stay low at your mileage, and Mahindra’s pricing of the mid trims means you don’t have to stretch for the useful bits like cruise control and six airbags. One thing you will have to live with is that the boot is smaller than most rivals, so fitting two large suitcases can be a squeeze.If you absolutely want an automatic for your 1,000 to 1,500 km of monthly city driving, options like the Kia Sonet, Kia Syros and Hyundai Venue offer smooth torque converter automatics in this price range and are very easy to live with in traffic. However, if fuel efficiency is a priority, we would suggest sticking to a manual, as it will be both more efficient and more affordable.If you’re fine with a manual, the XUV 3XO diesel is the sweet spot for torque, comfort, ground clearance and low running costs.

My dad wants a big SUV feel with status but under 20 lakh. He likes the Scorpio N, but I feel it will get outdated soon. We tried the Tata Sierra and Kia Caren but are still confused. We want good mileage and a full automatic. Our current car is a Kia Sonet, so driving should be on par or better.

The Mahindra Scorpio N is due for a facelift later this year, so if your father likes it and doesn't mind waiting, it could be worthwhile. However, while it has great road presence, it won't meet your other requirement of good mileage. The Scorpio N is a large, heavy, ladder-frame SUV whose focus is on strong performance and responsiveness, rather than mileage, so prepare for much lower figures than what you get in your Kia Sonet. Moreover, owing to its top-heavy ladder-frame layout, it won't drive as well as the Sonet, at least in terms of handling and sharp dynamics. What you get instead is a commanding driving position and a tough, robust feel from the driver's seat. For a good mix of road presence and driving dynamics, check out the Tata Sierra. You'll get a decently feature-packed variant around Rs 20 lakh. Also, it is the most spacious in the class, and the turbo-petrol and diesel engines come with a smooth torque-converter automatic that works well around town and on the highway. Moreover, since it is a monocoque SUV, it has more car-like driving dynamics, easier manoeuvrability, better ride quality and better refinement. For your requirements, the Sierra is the better pick.

I currently own a first-generation Toyota Innova diesel (7-seater) that I bought in 2008. It has covered 2.75 lakh km. Even today, I am inclined towards the Innova HyCross because of Toyota's reliability and long-term ownership experience. I am looking for a spacious family vehicle that offers comfort, good ride and handling, reliability, and is enjoyable to drive. My annual running is approximately 9,500 km, with 70% city use in Mumbai and 30% highway use, mainly on the Mumbai-Satara route. My budget is Rs 26 lakh, and the Hycross Hybrid is beyond that. I have considered the HyCross GX(O) petrol, but I am concerned about its fuel efficiency in city conditions. Should I still consider it? If not, what other options would suit my requirements? I am open to both SUVs and MPVs, although I am not inclined towards the Ertiga, XL6, or Kia Carens, as they do not feel like significant upgrades.

Yes, buy the Innova HyCross GXO non-hybrid. Your 70% Mumbai use and only 9,500 km a year means the hybrid’s big price jump will take ages to recover, while the GXO still gives you the Innova space, comfort and Toyota’s easy long-term ownership. In real Mumbai traffic, expect roughly 8-10 kpl and about 12-14 kpl on the Mumbai-Satara run. The automatic is smooth in the city, the ride is calm, and the third row is far better than any SUV at this price.One honest catch: the 2.0 petrol is relaxed, not exciting, and the GXO trim is light on features. If you want sharper performance and more kit, you will need to stretch, which you said you do not want to.If you still want options, look at the Hyundai Alcazar 1.5 turbo petrol. It is nicer to drive in the city and decently efficient, but it is a size smaller, and the third row is tight.The Mahindra XUV 7XO petrol is quick and feature-rich, yet its third row and boot cannot match the Innova, and long-term peace of mind still tilts toward Toyota. Diesel versions of these two could also be an option, but with your city-heavy running, you will need to make extra trips on the highway to keep the DPF healthy.

I want to buy a car under Rs 12 lakh. It should be a petrol automatic and will be my first car. I need good ground clearance, a good engine and gearbox combination for 70% city and 30% highway use, and my daily running is around 30 km in Bengaluru traffic. Comfort, space, decent fuel efficiency, ease of driving, and long-term ownership are important to me. I do not want a Fronx, Baleno, i20, Exter, Punch, or Nexon. Given your exclusions, the Skoda Kylaq automatic would be our first recommendation. Specifically, the Signature automatic is if you can stretch slightly. The 1.0 TSI turbo petrol and torque converter automatic are a very good combination for Bangalore traffic. The gearbox is smooth, the engine has enough punch for highway overtakes, and the car feels more premium and substantial than most options in this price range. Ground clearance is good, it is easy to drive, and it has the solid feel that many first-time buyers appreciate.Another strong option is the Mahindra XUV 3XO MX2 Pro automatic. It has a wider rear seat, feels bigger inside and is one of the most spacious compact SUVs in the segment. The torque converter automatic is smooth, and it is comfortable for city use. The downside is that fuel efficiency is not that great, and the boot is on the smaller side.If you are willing to consider a sedan, the Honda Amaze CVT is also worth a look. The CVT is exceptionally smooth in traffic, reliability is excellent, and it is the kind of car you can comfortably keep for a decade. The only reason it is not our primary recommendation is that you specifically mentioned wanting good ground clearance.
