I have a budget of Rs 20-30 lakh, and my daily commute is around 150 km. About 80% of my driving is on highways, while the remaining 20% is in the city. Which car would be the best choice for my usage?

With a daily running of 150 km, out of which 80% is on the highway, a diesel SUV makes the most sense. The Mahindra XUV 7XO diesel is the clear recommendation here. It is one of the best long-distance cruisers in its segment, with a powerful diesel engine, excellent ride comfort, and a spacious cabin that makes daily highway runs far less tiring. The diesel engine in this Mahindra car is also well suited to your usage pattern, offering strong efficiency and low running costs over high mileage.

The Kia Seltos diesel is another option if you want a slightly smaller SUV that's easier to drive in the city. However, given the highway-heavy usage, the XUV 7XO remains the better choice.

The only drawback is that the third row is best suited for occasional use. Overall, the Mahindra XUV 7XO diesel is a good fit for your needs.

I own a creta diesel automatic car for last 5 years. I want to change my car. Which one do you recommend

4h

My budget is 15-19lakhs I wanted a diesel manual car. I have considered 3xo diesel manual. However Mahindra hasn't been responsibe on when will they deliver it. Not considering creta diesel - expensive proposition, lacks safety, No Seltos- already own one. Other sub 4 metre have very poor back seat space( Nexon,Venue, Sonet), except 3xo I am fine. Suggest me other diesel manual options I can consider between 14-19 lakh.

@abhijitnanda Also not huge SUVs like Scorpio or XUV 7XO

I am planning to buy a Mahindra XUV 7XO petrol automatic and intend to keep it for 10-15 years. My biggest concern is not E20 but the possibility that India may move to E25, E27 or E30 during my ownership. Would you still recommend buying the 7XO today, or would you advise waiting or considering another powertrain? What is your assessment of the long-term policy risk versus the technical risk?

We would still recommend the Mahindra XUV 7XO petrol automatic without hesitation. The technical risk is low, while the policy risk is manageable. The XUV 7XO's petrol engine is E20-compliant, which means it is engineered to handle a 20% ethanol blend without any issues. The main impact of a higher ethanol blend is a slight drop in fuel efficiency and, over a very long period, some additional wear on certain rubber components in the fuel system. These parts are generally inexpensive to replace. At present, there is no official roadmap for moving beyond E20. Even if India eventually adopts E25, E27, or E30, manufacturers would almost certainly issue clear guidance and support for existing vehicles. The greater uncertainty lies in government policy rather than in the vehicle's engineering.Waiting indefinitely for a hypothetical future policy change is not a practical ownership strategy, particularly when the XUV 7XO is otherwise a strong long-term choice. Overall, the recommendation would be to buy the XUV 7XO today rather than let ethanol policy uncertainty dictate a 10-15-year ownership decision.

This is a question from a middle-class guy in Bangalore. My dad owns a Maruti Suzuki Alto K10, which has completed 15 years and has covered around 50,000 km so far. Our family has grown, so we now need to upgrade to a 7-seater. I am looking for the best fuel-efficient 7-seater. The options I have in mind are the Tata Safari, Mahindra XUV 7XO, and Kia Carens Clavis. I have driven Maruti cars enough, so I am not considering another one. What do the experts suggest?

Go for the Kia Carens Clavis diesel automatic. It is the most sensible and well-rounded choice for your needs. Coming from the Maruti Suzuki Alto K10, you will appreciate the Carens Clavis for its easy-to-drive nature, comfortable ride, and genuinely usable third row. This Kia car is also one of the most fuel-efficient 7-seaters in its segment, especially in diesel form, which is beneficial given your city driving in Bangalore and occasional highway trips. The automatic gearbox is smooth and stress-free in traffic, and despite being a proper 7-seater, the car is easy to manoeuvre. The Tata Safari and Mahindra XUV 7X0 are larger and more powerful, but they are also more expensive, less fuel-efficient, and not as easy to live with in the city. The Carens Clavis strikes the right balance between space, comfort, efficiency, and practicality, making it the best fit for a growing family looking for a long-term, hassle-free ownership experience.

Hello Autocar family, I am planning to buy a new car for me and my grandfather. I already have a Hyundai Santro at home, so this will be my second car. The mandatory requirements are a panoramic sunroof, a 360-degree camera, and decent mileage. My daily commute is around 30 km, including 20 km on the highway and 10 km in the city. The cars we are considering are the Kia Seltos GTX A, Mahindra XUV 7XO AX7T, Maruti Suzuki Victoris ZXI Plus (O), Hyundai Creta N Line, and Tata Sierra Adventure. I am also open to considering the Volkswagen Taigun and Skoda Kushaq. We are both confused and haven't been able to agree on one option. Please help us out, guys!

Go for the Kia Seltos GTX A. It is the most balanced choice for your requirements. Your daily usage of 30 km, with a mix of highway and city driving, does not justify a diesel, so a strong turbo-petrol with a reliable automatic gearbox is the better choice. This Kia car offers the panoramic sunroof and 360-degree camera you want, along with a well-rounded ownership experience, a wide service network, and a comfortable ride for your grandfather. The Mahindra XUV 7XO AX7 T is also a good option, but it is a much larger vehicle and not as easy to live with in the city. The Maruti Suzuki Victoris ZXI Plus (O) is a strong value-for-money proposition, but the Seltos feels more premium and better finished. The Hyundai Creta N Line is a good alternative if you prefer Hyundai, but the Seltos feels like the more complete package. The Tata Sierra Adventure is interesting, but its turbo-petrol engine still needs a longer ownership track record. The Volkswagen Taigun and Skoda Kushaq are excellent driver's cars, but the Seltos offers a better overall ownership experience. Overall, the Kia Seltos GTX A is the car you are most likely to be happiest with over the next five years.
