Which car should I buy if I plan to do road trips across India, including Ladakh, the Spiti circuit, followed by the 7 sisters & South India, with my family? I am looking for a five-seater, preferably diesel or hybrid. I can wait up to six months, until around Diwali. My yearly running will be around 10,000-12,000 km, which consists of 65% highway, 15% ghat roads, and 30% city driving. I live in the Thane suburbs (Dombivli). Good service, support and reliability are very important to me. The options I am considering are: XUV 7XO, Scorpio, Vision S, Thar Roxx, Duster (Hybrid), and Honda Elevate (Hybrid). Should I consider an AWD or 4x4 model, or are there any other options you would recommend?

From your list, the Mahindra Scorpio N 4x4 diesel is the safest fit for this use. As a five-seater with the last row folded, it offers a large boot, a tough body and proper 4x4 with low range for slush, snow or rocky terrain. It also has strong pulling power on steep hill roads when fully loaded. Mahindra’s wide service network on these routes is an added advantage when you are far from cities.

Be aware that the Scorpio N is not as quiet or as comfortable on long highways as softer monocoque SUVs, and in the city, the ride can feel a bit bouncy. The Mahindra XUV 7XO is the better road car. It is more comfortable and refined, but for your intended usage, it is not as robust or as versatile as the Scorpio N, especially for tougher terrain in the Himalayas where the Scorpio N’s higher ground clearance and proper 4x4 make a real difference. The same limitation applies to options like the Renault Duster Hybrid and Honda Elevate.

As for the Mahindra Thar Roxx, it is less comfortable than the Scorpio N, especially in terms of seating and long-distance usability. The Thar Roxx price starts at 12.52 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).

Hi, I currently drive a Kia Sonet HTX iMT, which I purchased in December 2020. It has covered around 46,500km so far, with an annual running of approximately 10,000km. My current daily usage is 34km, mainly on the highway, as my office is in an industrial area. I am now looking to upgrade to a mid-size SUV with an automatic transmission. My priorities are a feature-rich car with a 5-star safety rating, good mileage, and enough space for a family of four, with occasional seating for six people. Given your requirements, the best option is the Hyundai Alcazar petrol DCT. It's available as a six- or seven-seater, giving you the flexibility you need when your extended family joins you on your journeys, and its 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine is relatively fuel efficient for a car of its size. The dual-clutch automatic is smooth enough, though it can be a bit clunky at low speeds if not driven smoothly and carefully. Also worth noting is that even the base model petrol-AT Alcazar costs around Rs 21 lakh on road, and the Alcazar has not been tested by any NCAP authority.The next best option is not an SUV but arguably a more practical option - the Kia Carens Clavis. It uses the same engine and gearbox in a lighter package with more space on the inside. Other 7-seat SUV options with more space - like the Mahindra XUV 7XO, Tata Safari, Mahindra Scorpio-N and MG Hector Plus are available, but are nowhere near as fuel-efficient and will be out of your budget as well. All things considered, the Hyundai Alcazar is your best option.

I live in Hyderabad and am looking for a 5-seater car with a manual transmission and a minimum boot space of 470 litres. I prefer a manual because I feel automatic transmissions are more complex and could be expensive to repair in the future. Another, slightly unusual requirement is that I want a car with a reliable engine and transmission that can last 12-13 years or more, provided it receives timely engine oil changes and regular maintenance. Can anyone suggest some good manual SUV cars with an on-road price below Rs. 20 lakh?

Given your requirements for a large boot, opt for the Honda Elevate. At 458 litres the boot is under your specific measurement but is very well shaped and can easily managed a lot of cargo. Honda are known for their engines and your second requirement of a very reliable engine and gearbox will also be met with the Elevate. If you must have a minimum boot space of 470 litres consider the Renault Duster. At 518 litres the boot is the largest in the mid-size segment and the roof rails are also functional and can hold up to 50kgs so should you need even more space you can opt for a roof box, however check with your local RTO as these are not legal in many instances. If you are not looking for a very peppy drive feel, opt for the smaller 1.0 liter engine which does quite well in everyday traffic and even at steady cruising out on the highway. The engine and gearbox as well as the entire car is built tough and will last you for the 12 odd years you are looking to keeping the car, provided of course all services are done in a timely manner and the car is well looked after.

I currently drive a Grand i10 Manual petrol and am now planning to buy a new compact SUV that is comfortable, fuel efficient and has low maintenance. My usage is 35km of daily office commute in Delhi-NCR traffic. Please advice which option is best fit amongst Hyundai Venue HX 6T, SONET HTK+O and XUV 3XO.

Go for the Hyundai Venue. With your daily 35km commute in Delhi NCR traffic, comfort and low maintenance are key, and the Venue delivers on both. The 1.2 NA petrol is smooth, refined and easy to drive in stop-start conditions, while Hyundai’s service network and ownership experience are among the best in the segment. The HX6T variant also gives you a good balance of features without pushing the budget too far.The Sonet HTK+O is mechanically very similar, but the Venue is a newer model and offers a more spacious cabin. The XUV 3XO is also a good option, but its turbo petrol engine won't be as efficient as the Hyundai’s.Overall, the Venue is the most sensible upgrade from your Grand i10 for daily city use.

I am planning to buy a sub-compact SUV. My budget is Rs. 13-14 lakh, and my priorities are a smooth automatic transmission and good mileage. Go for the Maruti Suzuki Brezza ZXI AT. Your priorities are a smooth automatic, good fuel efficiency and a daily 30km commute in heavy bumper-to-bumper traffic. The Brezza’s 6-speed torque converter automatic is the best fit for this usage. It is smooth, reliable and well suited to stop-start conditions, and the naturally aspirated petrol engine is efficient and easy to live with. Maruti’s service reach and low maintenance costs add to the ownership peace of mind.The Sonet and Venue DCTs are good cars, but the DCT gearbox is not ideal for heavy traffic. It can feel jerky at low speeds.Alternatively, if you can arrange for home charging, the Tata Punch EV is an excellent option.
