Pascal Wehrlein sealed the 2024 Formula E drivers’ championship as Jaguar’s title hopes imploded in London. As a consolation, Jaguar did take home the teams’ and the newly introduced manufacturers’ titles.

Wehrlein wins first Formula E title
Heading into the London E-Prix double-header, Jaguar’s Nick Cassidy held a 12-point lead over his teammate Mitch Evans and Porsche’s Pascal Wehrlein. This lead was then slashed to nine points after Evans bagged pole position (and the three bonus points that come with it) for the first race. Cassidy, meanwhile, qualified down in 17th place.
It became a race of damage limitation for Cassidy as he missed the Attack Mode activations a few times, and was later involved in clashes with Jake Dennis and Stoffel Vandoorne. Despite all this, he managed to finish P7, but lost the championship lead to Wehrlein, who won the race ahead of Evans.
Cassidy endured even more heartbreak in the final race. He was leading in the initial stages, but took both of his mandatory Attack Mode activations rather early, sacrificing his lead in the process. His title hopes came to an end on Lap 29 when he picked up a puncture following light contact with Porsche’s Antonio Felix da Costa and was hit by Maserati’s Max Guenther just moments later.
Evans and Wehrlein, who were running 1-2 at this point, went off the racing line to activate Attack Mode, but they couldn’t deploy it since the Safety Car was out; this gave Nissan driver Oliver Rowland the chance to dive into the lead.
Once racing resumed, both Evans and Wehrlein had another crack at activating Attack Mode. But the Jaguar driver missed it once again and this opened the door for Wehrlein to pass him. More crucially, Evans was running out of time to take his two minutes of Attack Mode before the race ended. He was forced to slow down and settle for third place, effectively giving up his shot at winning the title.
Second place was enough for Wehrlein to win the championship. “We did it! We’re World Champions! We knew we weren’t the favourites coming to London because we’ve never performed particularly well on this track, but we always believed we could do it,” he said. “Our days here in London have been terrific, we didn’t make any mistakes and improved from session to session.”
Mahindra ends season with double points finish
At the start of this season, Mahindra Racing CEO Frederic Bertrand had downplayed expectations. The team had struggled last year and the two-season homologation rule meant it had to field the same car this season.
The focus was always on learning as much as possible in order to prepare a stronger contender for Season 11. So, it’s not all that surprising that Mahindra ended up ninth in the teams’ standings, only ahead of ERT.
Nevertheless, the team wrapped up the 2024 season on a high note – securing its best result of the season as Nyck de Vries and Edoardo Mortara finished the first race in P4 and P5, respectively.
Unfortunately, they couldn’t carry the same momentum into the second race. Mortara was forced to retire after being pushed into the wall by Dennis. De Vries, meanwhile, finished down in P16.
Maserati driver Jehan Daruvala’s rookie season also came to an early end after Sam Bird collided with him while battling for 10th place.
