Mahindra vs Hyundai vs Tata: Battle for second bestselling carmaker intensifies in July

Vahan data shows that Hyundai ranked second in retail sales, but Mahindra had a larger number of wholesales in July.

Hyundai moved back to the second spot in the domestic passenger vehicle market in July, surpassing Mahindra in retail sales during the month. The Korean carmaker, which had lost its position as the second-largest passenger vehicle seller in the Indian market in April, May, and June, retailed 42,661 vehicles in July, according to data from the Vahan portal.

Hyundai’s retail sales increased 8 percent compared to June, while Mahindra saw its passenger vehicle sales drop 2 percent to 41,476 units. Tata remained in the fourth position with retail sales of 39,795, up 12.6 percent. Mahindra had, for the first time, surpassed Hyundai to become the second-largest player in the domestic passenger vehicle market during the first quarter of this financial year; the SUV specialist was in the second position in April, May and June.

However, in July, Mahindra saw its passenger vehicle market share in retail sales drop to 12.8 percent from 14 percent in June. Tata Motors also witnessed a market share decline to 11.7 percent from 12.3 percent. Hyundai, on the other hand, improved its market share to 13.2 percent from 12.9 percent. 

Maruti Suzuki remains the largest player in the passenger vehicle market. In July, the automaker’s sales grew 8 percent to 1.28 lakh units from June, while its market share improved to 39.8 percent from 38 percent.

Mahindra’s domestic SUV wholesales reached 49,871 units, marking a robust 20 percent year-on-year growth and cementing its position as India’s second-largest passenger vehicle manufacturer. Hyundai was third with domestic wholesales of 43,973 units, while Tata was fourth with passenger vehicle despatches declining 11 percent year-on-year to 40,175 units. However, Tata did achieve a milestone with its highest-ever monthly EV wholesales of 7,124 units.
