Tesla Model X expert review
We like
Effortless performance and grunt
Spacious interior
Brilliant engineering
We don't like
Feels big, heavy and stogy to drive
Cabin quality need upgrade
Radically different from conventional SUVs, the Model X pushes boundaries in both design and innovation. It features a low bonnet for aerodynamic gains, clean surfacing, and a drag coefficient of just 0.25 Cd—making it the most slippery SUV on the planet. Its underfloor aerodynamics and tight cabin proportions contribute further. Built from extruded aluminum and reinforced with boron steel, it’s lighter than expected despite weighing 2.5 tonnes. Much of this weight comes from its massive lithium-ion battery pack—up to 100kWh. With air suspension raising it to 211mm, it can clear speed breakers easily, though off-roading isn’t its forte. Falcon-wing doors add showmanship and practicality and part of the smart design includes seamless access to the third row.

Driving the Model X feels like piloting something from the future. There’s no starter button—it powers up as soon as you press the brake. Select drive, hit the accelerator, and it rockets forward silently. Instant torque from dual electric motors delivers brutal acceleration, and traction control ensures zero drama. From rest or mid-speed, the surge feels surreal. A quick V-box test confirms its claim: 0–100kph in just 4.4 seconds in standard mode. Above 150kph, performance tapers slightly, but even when driven gently, it remains smooth, responsive, and easy to manage. The Plaid’s 1,020hp spec promises even more lunacy.

Electric powertrains are heavy, and despite its air suspension, the Model X can feel firm over uneven terrain. It manages body roll well due to its low center of gravity, but handling lacks engagement. It’s stable and composed, but doesn't encourage spirited cornering—more bullet train than sports SUV. Tesla’s engineers have masked its bulk admirably, though rivals like the Porsche Cayenne and BMW X5 offer sharper dynamics.
