The new Volvo V90 has been revealed ahead of its public debut at the Geneva motor show. It will be offered with the same safety systems and efficient Drive-e powertrains as its S90 and XC90 siblings.

Unsurprisingly, the shape of the V90 is similar to that of the S90, and it also takes some inspiration from 2014’s Volvo Concept Estate. Thanks to a series of leaked images, we’ve already seen the exterior of the new car prior to its official unveiling.

Inside, the five-seat V90 is similar to the S90 in terms of the large touchscreen infotainment interface and digital dashboard technology.

The increase in dimensions allows the V90 to carry up to 1,526 litres of luggage, including underfloor storage.

Leading the powertrain options is the top-spec, T8 'Twin Engine' plug-in hybrid, which mates an 87bhp, 24.47kgm electric motor to a 2.0-litre petrol motor resulting in a combined output of 401bhp and 65.25kgm of torque.

The other engines in the range are all 2.0-litre, four-cylinder units. The T5 produces 250bhp and 35.67kgm of torque. The equivalent diesel, the D4, uses a two-stage turbo to produce 187bhp and 40.78kgm. A D5 twin-turbo diesel engine with 232bhp and 47.69kgm of torque is also available, in a four-wheel drive format.

A more powerful, turbo and supercharged four-cylinder T6 petrol engine with 315bhp and 40.78kgm, and all-wheel drive is also offered. All engines are coupled to an eight-speed automatic gearbox.

The V90 shares the same safety equipment as the S90 and XC90. This means that Volvo's IntelliSafe assist system, with adaptive cruise control, semi-autonomous 'Pilot Assist II' system and distance alert comes as standard, alongside a lane keeping aid, driver alertness detection and warning, road sign recognition system.

Autonomous emergency braking provided also features, with pedestrian, vehicle, cyclist and large animal detection, including warning lights, brake pulsing, front seat belt pre-tensioning and automatic braking at potential junction accidents.

A sportier version of the V90 tuned by Polestar is very likely at a later stage.
