Maruti Suzuki’s hot selling hatchback, the Swift has hit a high point with sales of 10,900 units during December 2009. These are its highest monthly sales since it was launched in May 2005.
Over the years, Swift has faced an onslaught of competition, initially from the Getz and later on the Fabia, Indica Vista, Punto and i20. Swift’s powerful 1.3-litre petrol motor was a driver’s delight but a diesel engine was sorely missed. It was in January 2007 when Maruti introduced Fiat’s 1.3-litre Multijet diesel engine under its hood, and this took the game further away from its rivals. This was also the first time when India witnessed Fiat’s excellent Multijet technology, which later made its way in the Dzire, Indica Vista, Palio, Punto and the Ritz.
With minor facelifts like crystal tail lamps and change in wheel cover design along with brilliant engine options the Swift relentlessly attracted buyers in enviable numbers. Maruti’s strong after sales and low running costs further adding to its appeal.
