Mahindra & Mahindra has announced a voluntary recall of the SsangYong Rexton in India to inspect the rear driveshaft for the possibility of any loss of torque, according to the company statement.
The recall affects all Rexton SUVs manufactured on or before September 2014. The inspection and rectification will be carried out free of cost for all Rexton customers. The number of vehicles affected by this recall is currently not known. Mahindra has also stated that affected customers will be contacted individually.
Besides this, customers can also visit the company website and check if their vehicle is part of the recall within the ‘service action’ section on the website, the carmaker said in the statement.
The total number of vehicle recalls in India, after the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers’(SIAM) Code of Voluntary Recall came into effect in July 2012, recently crossed the 2.3 million mark.
In India, there is yet to be a law by the government that makes recalls mandatory, in case of any technical snag. However, SIAM's voluntary recall code, which places the onus on the manufacturer to recall defective vehicles, has helped in improving the vehicle recall exercise in India.
