Maruti Suzuki has issued a software update for its SmartPlay infotainment system that includes Android Auto and new maps for the navigation system.

Before this update, the only cars in the Maruti stable to offer both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay were the Ignis and the Dzire. The Baleno, Ciaz, Ertiga, Vitara Brezza and S-cross came with the SmartPlay infotainment system in some variants but offered only Apple CarPlay across the board.

While delearships are loathe to confirm whether new models will come with Android Auto from the factory, new and old owners of these models can contact their respective Maruti Suzuki dealerships in order to upgrade their infotainment system for free.

The new Android Auto update (as with Apple CarPlay) will enable users to connect their smartphones to the infotainment system via USB to access an array of apps, in addition to contacts on the phone, Google maps, hands-free calling and more.

The 2.5GB update, which includes the new maps, is valid until 2020 and is being offered for free.

The upgraded infotainment system puts the Japanese brand on par with rivals such as Hyundai and Volkswagen in terms of smartphone connectivity in some of its models.
