As soon as the SLS AMG coupe was uncovered, we all knew that Mercedes-Benz is quietly working on a drop top version. It’s official now! The company has confirmed that it is working on a SLS roadster. These are the clearest images yet of Mercedes-Benz’s drop-top SLS roadster, spied virtually undisguised - and with its roof down - during tests in Germany.

The doors, now conventional are cut down deeper into the flanks and are operated with Mercedes-saloon-style door handles as opposed to the pop-out type used in the coupe; but the impression of an extremely long hood is still intact. The trunk lid is said to be actually substantially taller, in order to cover the electrically operated convertible roof. Rollover protection is provided by two fixed roll hoops, and the seats don't look much different from those in the coupe.

It proves with the upcoming SLS AMG Roadster that Mercedes is truly paying homage to the original 300SL, code-named W198 - the original gullwing was launched in 1954, followed by a roadster version in 1957. Unlike its historical role model the SLS AMG won't be entirely replaced by the roadster version. Rather, it will be complemented by latter, with both cars being sold alongside each other.
