Following the successful acquisition of tuning specialists Polestar on July 14, Volvo has revealed that it is considering developing high-performance hybrid models under the Polestar guise. Polestar had previously partnered with Volvo to develop high-performance cars, with the S60 and V60 Polestars being the newest.

Talking about the future following the acquisition, a company official said that the Volvo planned to sell over a 1,000 units of its Polestar models in the near future, while in the longer run, it would develop high-performance hybrid models utilising Volvo’s new twin-engine technology.

It’s likely that Polestar will adopt a set-up similar to the new T8 twin-engine powertrain, but retune it for a higher performance, or use the powertrain in its existing form in new smaller vehicles based on the XC90’s Scalable Product Architecture platform. This means that the first likely candidate could be the new S60, due in 2017.

Volvo has declined to reveal the cost of the acquisition though they will be retaining all Polestar employees, including the company’s motorsport division which will be rebranded, but remain under the control of current boss Christian Dahl.

In India, Volvo is expected to launch the Polestar performance division sometime in 2016 with the S60 and V60 Polestar models.
