India's leading utility vehicle maker Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) today announced that its executive director Pawan Goenka has been elevated to the position of managing director. It also said that Anand Mahindra, who currently holds the position of managing director and chairman, is being designated as executive chairman of the company.

Goenka will continue to oversee and be responsible for shaping the growth strategies of M&M and its portfolio of investments.

The organisation structures and processes at M&M have already been aligned with this change over the past one year, the carmaker said in a release.

Goenka joined M&M as general manager (R&D) in 1993 after working for General Motors in Detroit for 14 years. He was instrumental in growing the carmaker’s research and development capability and for the launch of the Scorpio. He was appointed president of the automotive division in 2006, automotive and farm equipment division in 2010, and was appointed executive director on the board of M&M in 2013.
