The ongoing 36th Vienna Motor Symposium was a platform for Volkswagen to showcase some of its newly developed engines. Amongst various engines and technologies detailed, there was a 1.0-litre three-cylinder TSI petrol engine and a 1.4-litre three-cylinder TDI diesel unit. The three-cylinder units have been confirmed for use in future Volkswagen Polo and Golf cars.

Both these engines can be tuned to deliver varying amounts of power and torque. The carmaker even went on to show how the 1.0-litre petrol unit can be tweaked with a turbocharger and electric booster to deliver close to 270bhp. Volkswagen has also confirmed that the engines can be tuned to run on CNG.

Apart from the smaller engines, the highlight of VW’s display was the monsterous 600bhp 6.0-litre W12 TSI engine. Although the W12 engine hasn’t been earmarked for any particular model yet, it is likely to end up as an option on several premium models of the Volkswagen group; models like the upcoming Bentley Bentayga or the next generations of the Bentley Continental, the Audi A8 and the Volkswagen Phaeton.

What’s interesting to note is, while you would know the W12 as the soul of the Bentley Flying Spur or the Audi A8 in some global markets, the engines have never worn the TSI badge. The naturally-aspirated W12 gets dense technology that includes a combination of Audi's FSI direct injection and Bentley's TMPI multi-point injection.
