McLaren has revealed a special edition 650S – known as the 650S Can-Am – to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Canadian American racing series. Based on the Spider 650S, the Can-Am version is only available in the open-top body style, and features a carbonfibre bonnet, retractable hard-top, air brake, front splitter, rear bumper, door blades and sill cover.

It gets carbon ceramic brakes as standard, with black callipers. McLaren Special Operations has also given the car a set of lightweight, glossy black alloy wheels. The Can-Am edition also features a stainless-steel quad exhaust system and is available in three colours – red, black and orange (as a tribute to the original Can-Am racers).

Interiors get leather and Alcantara-covered sports seats as standard, and a unique Can-Am plaque on the driver-side door. The engine, carried over from the standard 650S, develops 641bhp and 69.12kgm of torque, as in the stock car, propelling the car from standstill to 100kph in a claimed 3.0seconds.

The McLaren 650S Can-Am will be limited to just 50 production units globally.

Meanwhile, McLaren has confirmed considerations for a 675LT Spyder to our sister publication Autocar UK. The foldable hard-top convertible shall borrow the coupe's 666bhp, 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged engine, and is expected to weigh only marginally more than the coupe. The carmaker is yet to finalise production for the convertible.
