Car sales in May 2010 continued to be in the positive with majority of the car-makers posting their monthly sales report in the green. Maruti Suzuki, India’s leading car maker, managed to sell over one lakh units in the month of May. The company sold 1,02,175 units in the said month, which is the company’s highest ever sales, beating its previous monthly sales of 96,650 units sold in February 2010.
The country's second largest carmaker, Hyundai Motor India, managed to sell 27,151 units in May 2010, an increase of 15.52 per cent in domestic sales as compared to 23,503 units sold in May 2009. Toyota Kirloskar Motors too have posted a strong performance selling 6,050 units in May 2010, a growth of 54% over the same period last year.
Ford India sold 8,080 units in May this year which amounts to an over three-fold jump in sales for the said month, on the back of a good response to the Figo. The company had only sold 2,168 units during the same month last year.
Tata Motors also reported a significant increase of 41% in total sales over May 2009 at 56,779 units. Domestic sales were up by 38% at 52,801 units. The passenger vehicle segment registered a 39% increase in sales at 21,326 vehicles which includes 3,550 units of the Nano. Jaguar Land Rover sales have also been reported to continue an upward trend. Exports for Tata Motors grew by 121% from 1,804 vehicles last May to 3,978 vehicles in May 2010.
Fiat India Automobiles reported a noteworthy sales growth of 82.2% for the month of May as compared to the corresponding period of the last year. SkodaAuto India achieves a sales growth of 30 % in May 2010 over the same period last year. Total sales for May 2010 stood at 1381 units as compared to 1062 units for May 2009.
