Mahindra’s bestselling SUV, the Bolero, is due for an upgrade soon to comply with the upcoming safety and emission standards. Just recently, a Bolero with Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) was spotted at a dealership. Now, another set of pictures confirm that the upcoming SUV will also get a driver-side airbag and rear parking sensors.

Accommodating a driver-side airbag in the steering meant that Mahindra had to ditch the old steering wheel and replace it with the TUV300’s unit. Vehicular safety measures like a driver-side airbag, a seat-belt reminder, a speed alert system and rear parking sensors will be mandatory on all cars in India from July 2019. Thus, all these features are expected to make it to the upcoming Bolero – along with the additional passenger seat-belt reminder.

The more stringent offset front and side crash-test standards will also come into effect from October 2019. This would mean the Bolero will see structural changes so that it can clear these stringent norms. Later on, the Bolero will also get a BS-VI-compliant engine so that it can stay on sale in India post the April 1, 2020 deadline.

The pictures also reveal that there aren’t any other major changes on the inside, nor on the outside. The interiors still carry the same dual-tone theme, a digital instrument cluster, a faux-wood finish and a single-DIN audio system from the Bolero Power Plus ZLX variant. Power still comes from Mahindra’s mHawkD70 1.5-litre diesel engine that makes 70hp and 195Nm of torque.

The Bolero has been the highest-selling Mahindra SUV for quite a while now and is a popular name in the Indian market. Even though its sales may have slightly decreased in the recent past, Mahindra will continue to update the Bolero in order to keep the name alive and cash in on the high profit margins that sales of the SUV provide.
