Ford has closed the order books for the first batch of its GT models. The application window was open for just a month and successful buyers will be notified in the next 90 days.

The first 500 units will be produced over the next two years but another batch will begin production after that, with order books expected to reopen in 12 months’ time.

With 6,506 people applying to own the GT, Ford says that it will pick buyers based on responses to a questionnaire. The carmaker added that preference will be given to prospective buyers who will be regularly driving the car, rather than collectors who may not take it out on to the road.

While Ford produced 4,000 units of the previous-generation GT, the company has already confirmed that production of the new GT will be limited to just 250 units per year. First deliveries are set for later this year.

The new Ford GT is powered a twin-turbo 3.5-litre EcoBoost V6 instead of the V8 engine that powered its predecessor. Ford claims a power output of over 600hp.
