    Exclusive! New Cars for 2011

    Hyundai HA (Mid-2011)
Hyundai aims to steal some of the Nano’s thunder with the inclusion of a Rs 2-3 lakh car. At this price, it will be able to compete with the top-end versions of the Nano and scaled down and slashed products from Maruti as well. The HA will be based on a pared-down Santro platform. The motor that powers the car will be an 814cc three-cylinder version of the Epsilon engine in the Santro, developing approximately 48bhp, and Hyundai will carry over other bits and pieces too. Hyundai knows how to build quality products that are well engineered, well suited to Indian conditions, deliver very good fuel economy and the company is at the top of the game as far as parts and service are concerned too.

    Hyundai Verna (Mid-2011)
In 2010, Hyundai launched the RB compact saloon at the Moscow Motor Show. Simply put, the Hyundai RB is a repackaged new Accent with new bumpers and a new front grille, hood and headlights. Its design incorporates Hyundai’s ‘fluidic sculpture’ design language. It will be available with Hyundai’s new 1.4 and 1.6 Gamma petrol engines, producing 106bhp and 122bhp respectively. Transmission options for both engines include a four-speed automatic and a five-speed manual. And you can bet there will be a punchy diesel as well.

    Land Rover Freelander 2 (India-assembled) (Mid-2011)
After recording over 225 units sold in its first year of sales in India (2010), Tata Motors will begin assembling the Land Rover Freelander 2 in India. The move has been promoted by increasing popularity for Jaguar Land Rover models and SUVs in India. Also, local assembly should help bring the Freelander’s list price down by Rs 6-7 lakh. In Mumbai, where it is sold at an even greater premium, the list price could fall by as much as 20 percent. Autocar India learns that Tata Motors will use the Pune plant that was earlier used by Mercedes-Benz to assemble the Freelander. The plant has a capacity to assemble around 3,500 vehicles per year. And just as Mercedes did, Land Rover will use Tata Motors’ paint shop for the Freelander.

    Mahindra Logan face-lift (Mid-2011)
Though Mahindra and Renault have parted ways, Mahindra has expressed that there will be a new refreshed Logan very soon. Many pictures of a face-lifted Logan having been doing the rounds recently but we expect Mahindra to give the Logan a radical face-lift to boost sales. Evident differences in the new car will be the sleeker bumpers, a wider front grille, clear-lens headlamps and altered tail-lamps on the outside. On the inside, expect to see a cleaner centre console with new dials, better-looking switches and two-tone interiors. Mahindra is also working on reducing the length of the car to below four metres, which will get it an excise rebate and allow it to price the car very aggressively.

    Mahindra Reva NXR (December 2011)
First seen at the Frankfurt Motor Show 2009, the Reva NXR is in its final phase of testing and will hit Indian roads very soon. The new Reva is a three-door, four-seater family hatchback that will come in two versions – the NXR and the NXR City. While the NXR with its lithium ion batteries has a claimed top speed of 104kph with a range of 160km per charge, the NXR City has a claimed top speed of 80kph with a range of 80km per charge with its cheaper lead acid battery. When we spoke to the chairman of the joint venture between Mahindra & Mahindra, Renault and Nissan, Dr Pawan Goenka, he said that the NXR will do 0-50kph in 5.5 seconds!

    Mahindra Mini-Xylo (Mid-2011)
The mini-Xylo is currently undergoing tests all over India. It will be less than four metres long and will come with a diesel engine under 1.5-litres to qualify as a ‘small car’ to avail of a substantial 12 percent saving in excise duty. The mini-Xylo uses a shortened version of the current Xylo’s body-on-frame chassis and the existing 2.5 CRDe engine has been downsized as well. Engine capacity has been reduced from 2.5-litres to under 1.5-litres by simply eliminating one cylinder (the mini-Xylo will have a three-cylinder engine) and reducing the bore and stroke. The junior Xylo will be aggressively priced and we expect it to retail for around Rs 4-5 lakh when it goes on sale next year.

    Mahindra W201 (June 2011)
Mahindra’s next major SUV, known internally by the codename W201, is still being seen by many under heavy camouflage. The W201 will compete against saloons and not other SUVs as, like the Scorpio, it will be the only car of its kind in it’s class. It is M&M’s first front-wheel-drive vehicle and, like all modern monocoque SUVs, will come with a four-wheel-drive option as well. It will be powered by a transversely mounted mHawk engine from the Scorpio but with an all-new six-speed manual transmission and automatic ’box option as well. Practicality and space have been given a lot of importance too, so expect the same almost chair-like vertical seating and plenty of technical features.
