The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has issued a ban on all diesel vehicles — private and commercial — over 10 years old in Delhi and in the neighbouring states of Haryana and UP. Last November, the Tribunal had passed a ruling to ban all vehicles over 15 years old. But the states failed to adhere to it.

A bench of the green court, headed by its chairperson, Justice Swatanter Kumar, ruled: “No diesel vehicles — light or heavy — over 10 years will be allowed to operate in Delhi- NCR. All registering authorities in Haryana, UP and Delhi would file a list of petrol vehicles more than 15 years old and diesel vehicles more than 10 years old before the tribunal and provide the same to the (state) police.”

The NGT has also asked the state to set up pollution check booths at the borders to check vehicles entering the area for emissions and overloading. The NGT has also expressed its displeasure to the Haryana state government for ‘shifting dates’ of the completion of the Western Peripheral Expressway that will keep trucks from entering Delhi.
