BMW is set to peel off the camouflage of the M6 GT3 race car at the Frankfurt motor show, this September. Previously displayed at the 24 hours of Spa race wearing body camouflage, the car is the replacement for the current Z4 GT3.
The M6 GT3 is based on the M6 coupé, but features a new front bumper with a splitter, wide aerodynamic body kit, new rear bumper with a diffuser, prominent rear wing, ventilated hood, and an exit hatch on the roof to escape the car in the event of a crash.
BMW has equipped the car with an FIA-approved safety cell, a self-supporting steel chassis, a carbon-fiber crash structure at the front and carbon-fiber reinforced plastic crash element at the rear, while achieving a total weight of less than 1,300kg.
The M6 GT3 is powered by a modified version of the company’s 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 with output expected to be anywhere up to 577bhp, depending on the race classification. The engine will be mated to a six-speed sequential gearbox. Running costs are expected to be 30 percent lower as compared to the outgoing Z4 GT3.
Said to be the most economical GT car to be built by the company, the M6 GT3 will make its racing debut in 2016.
