The BMW 5-series has received five star ratings from the Euro NCAP safety testing organisation.

Noteworthy results included the BMW scoring 100 percent in the Safety Assist section of the test, as stability control, seatbelt reminders and a driver-set speed limitation device are all standard across the range. It also scored well in the pedestrian impact test, aided by its 'active bonnet' which is lifted by actuators when a crash is detected, creating more space to absorb the energy of a struck pedestrian.

The BMW features highly resilient bearer structures, precisely defined deformation zones, numerous airbags (front, pelvis-thorax, and side curtain), active front headrests, and an active bonnet (which uses pyrotechnic charges to raise the hood to reduce injury to pedestrians and cyclists). More importantly, the 5-Series is equipped with an advanced passenger cell which causes forces from a front-end collision to be "dissipated via a number of different load paths in the floor assembly, side frame, front wall and roof."

BMW 5 series is available in India in both petrol as well as diesel variants with prices ranging from Rs 38.90lakh for the 523i petrol and Rs 45.90lakh for 530d Diesel (all prices ex-showroom Mumbai).
