While BMW is preparing the next-gen 3-series for a global debut sometime in 2018, the next-gen model is expected to be short one family member. Sources claim that BMW could be doing away with the 3-series GT derivative after the current model runs its course.

The 3-series GT has been a unique model for the automaker. While it is based on the 3-series, it has offered more interior comfort thanks to its longer length and wheelbase. But now BMW is considering scrapping the model in favour of contining production of the sportier looking four-door 4-series Gran Coupe when the next-gen model rolls-out in 2018.

The next-gen 3-series, codenamed G20, is set to borrow much of its styling cues from the new 5-series with test mules of the car having been spotted with a familiar front fascia.

The G20 3-series is expected to feature BMW’s turbocharged 1.5-litre three-cylinder engine in an entry-level model, with turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines directly above it in the range.

More potent models, including the M3, will most likely still use turbocharged in-line six-cylinder units, but with gains in power.

The 4-series has also been on sale for a considerable period of time internationally with the model positioned just above the regular 3-series as a sportier-looking sibling. The model too is set to undergo a generation change in the year following the debut of the new 3-series.

In India, BMW has been selling both the regular 3-series and the recently launched facelifted 3-series GT, though the 4-series is only available as the high-performance two-door M4 Coupe.
