  • Cash discounts range from Rs 25,000-50,000

  • Exchange bonus ranges from Rs 20,000-50,000

  • Current-gen City to be sold alongside new model

The India launch of the all-new Honda City is just around the corner, but before it arrives, the carmaker wants to shift as many units of the current-gen City off showroom floors as possible. In a bid to have customers snap up the current model, Honda is now doling out discounts of up to Rs 1 lakh on the upgraded, BS6-compliant City.

Lower-spec variants of the Honda City – SV MT, V MT and V CVT – are being offered with a straight Rs 25,000 cash discount, and an exchange bonus of Rs 20,000, bringing total savings up to Rs 45,000. On the mid-spec VX MT, there’s a cash discount of Rs 37,000 and an exchange bonus of Rs 35,000, totalling up to Rs 72,000. The highest discounts are available on the top-spec Honda City variants – the ZX MT, VX CVT and ZX CVT, all of which are available with a Rs 50,000 cash discount and an exchange bonus of Rs 50,000 as well. The total savings will be even higher for those eligible for additional corporate discounts. Prices of the current, BS6-compliant City range from Rs 9.91 lakh to Rs 14.31 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).

It was towards the end of 2019 that Honda launched the fourth-generation City with a BS6-compliant petrol engine; essentially the same 119hp, 1.5-litre petrol as before, upgraded to meet the more stringent emission standards. Instead of phasing it out, Honda is set to continue selling the fourth-gen City alongside the all-new model, as that will help the company widen its spread in the segment. The current model is likely to receive a significant price drop once the new car arrives, which will help Honda cater to a separate set of customers; some of them potentially from the fleet segment. The fifth-generation Honda City – which will come with a 1.5-litre diesel and a new, twin-cam 1.5-litre petrol – is set to be launched by the end of May.

As it looks to revive business once again, with the lockdown being relaxed in a number of regions, Honda has already reopened 118 showrooms and 155 service centres across India, and has also introduced its 'Honda From Home' online sales platform.
