Along with the price hike comes a minor equipment update. Given the ongoing chip shortage, Skoda has replaced the 10-inch infotainment screen on the Slavia as well as the Kushaq with an 8.0-inch unit. The new unit misses out on wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Last month, Skoda had also raised the prices of the Kushaq SUV by up to Rs 70,000.

Skoda Slavia rivals and positioning

Even before this price hike, the Slavia was one of the more expensive cars in the segment that consists of sedans like the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, Hyundai Verna and Honda City. In fact, in its top-spec avatar, the Slavia is the second most expensive car after the recently launched Honda City Hybrid which retails for Rs 19.49 lakh.

This hike also pushes the prices of the Slavia closer to the Kushaq, which is the more popular choice in Skoda’s India portfolio. Moreover, Volkswagen is all set to launch the Virtus  a sister model to the Slavia  on June 9. It would be interesting to see how Volkswagen manages to price it and if it can undercut the Skoda Slavia.
