BMW has introduced the updated M2 sports coupe, with an optional M xDrive AWD system. While the AWD system translates into a slightly faster 0-100kph acceleration time, it is only offered with an 8-speed automatic transmission. Moreover, the M2’s engine now gets BMW’s patented M Ignition technology that reduces fuel consumption under higher loads.
- M xDrive AWD system enables a 3.7-second 0-100kph time.
- Gets the same 480hp, 600Nm, 3-litre straight-six petrol engine as the regular M2.
2026 BMW M2 M xDrive details
The optional M xDrive system on board is rear-wheel-drive biased and sends power to the front wheels if the rear wheels lose grip. Furthermore, BMW says that the AWD system enables stability for driving in all weather conditions. The system’s behaviour can be fine-tuned according to customer preference via the M Setup menu on the infotainment system. The setup also includes the option to turn off stability control fully and enable 2WD mode, which sends power to the rear wheels exclusively.
Powering the M2 M xDrive is the same 480hp, 600Nm, 3.0-litre straight-six engine that also powers the standard rear-wheel-drive M2. However, the xDrive enables a 0.3-second quicker 0-100kph time of 3.7 seconds as opposed to 4 seconds on the standard M2. Top speed is limited to 250kph, with the optional M Driver’s Package extending it to 285kph.
Additionally, the 2026 M2’s engine gets BMW’s patented M Ignition technology. The tech adds a small pre-combustion chamber above the main cylinder. Under high load, a spark plug ignites the fuel first, with the mini-explosion transferring it to the main combustion chamber. This enables more efficient fuel burning, leading to lower fuel consumption. BMW says that the technology allows for longer track days.
2026 BMW M2 M xDrive exterior and interior details
On the outside, the M2 with M xDrive does not get any design changes over the standard model. The familiar sports coupe silhouette with a long bonnet and a short rear end is retained. You continue to get 19-inch and 20-inch rims for the front and rear wheels, respectively. Muscular rear haunches, flared wheel arches, and a wide stance give it definition. BMW has also introduced a new Borusan Turkish Blue paint option for the 2026 M2.
The interior is a familiar affair with a dual-screen setup for the digital driver display and infotainment screen. There’s M branding for the flat-bottom steering wheel, M-specific graphics for the infotainment system, and the M tricolour trim for the door pads. Additionally, there are also lightweight carbon bucket seats on offer.
