The Hyundai Verna has received a comprehensive update that brings in refreshed styling, more features and a new set of powertrains. And if there’s one version that has our attention, it’s the new 1.0-litre turbo-petrol-powered Verna Turbo GDI. Read on to know what makes it stand out in the Verna line-up.

Verna Turbo exterior: Same, but different

With sleek LED headlamps and projector fog lamps flanking a large ‘cascading’ grille, the basic layout up front remains common. The main distinction is brought out by the grille design – the standard Verna gets a chrome embellished mesh pattern, while the Turbo gets a glossy black treatment with triangular elements. Also note the chrome-lipped front bumper on the standard versions.

The two trim lines remain virtually indistinguishable in profile, barring some blacked-out components on the Turbo, like the shark-fin antenna and wing mirrors. Elements like a chrome window line, chrome door handles and 16-inch diamond cut alloy wheels are shared between the two versions.

In line with its sporty intentions, the Turbo boasts a twin-tip exhaust and a tweaked rear bumper design with diamond motifs at the lower edges.  It also has a ‘Turbo’ badge on the boot lid.

Though the Verna’s cabin is still a familiar place, Hyundai has added some minor design touches and bundled in more equipment to keep things fresh. Standard versions continue with a dual-tone, beige-on-black theme. The new Verna Turbo offering, however, leans into its performance-oriented positioning and gets an all-black colour scheme with red accents on the AC vents, steering wheel, gearshift gaiter and seat upholstery.

Verna Turbo features: Just a little extra

In true Hyundai fashion, the Verna comes loaded with equipment. Range-topping Verna variants get a sunroof, ventilated seats at the front, hands-free boot opening, and Blue Link connected car tech. The Turbo further ups its novelty factor by additionally featuring paddleshifters, front parking sensors and rear disc brakes.

Verna Turbo engine-gearbox: The sportiest Verna yet?

The Verna Turbo promises much by the way of performance, owing to a 120hp, 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine under the hood, mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch auto gearbox. The standard iterations of the sedan offer a choice between two 115hp, 1.5-litre units – a naturally aspirated petrol and a diesel mill. While a 6-speed manual gearbox is common, the two get different types of automatics – a CVT is offered on the former, while the diesel gets a torque converter.

Verna Turbo price: Pay for the performance

The standard Verna is available in three trim levels – S/S+, SX, SX(O) – prices for which range from Rs 9.31-13.85 lakh for the naturally aspirated petrol, and Rs 10.66-15.10 lakh for the diesel. The Turbo, on the other hand, is available in only the range-topping SX(O) variant with a sticker price of Rs 13.99 lakh.
